Aerostar performance

I just got my 92 Aerostar 3.0L a few months ago and now after fixing is mechanical problems I'm looking for ways to wake up the engine a little bit.
I already have a K&N, an IAT mod from a ranger site, and an electric fan. One of the things I'm really curious about is whether or not a chip that's meant for the same year and engine ranger will work in my aerostar and whether or not headers for a ranger will fit or if I'll have to weld up my own.

Ranger headers theoretically fit, but I would guess some modifiactions would be necessary. Do you have a K&N cone, or panel filter? If it's a panel, remove the silencer cone on the inlet of your airbox and cut another hole in the front (I did ) it helps throttle response some and upper RPM hp. Also, I'm trying to figure out a good way of eliminating the air tube, since it's a major intake restriction.

Please fill me in on the IAT mod. I am not sure whether the headers from a ranger will fit but I will be trying some myself shortly. As far as performance goes, I have removed the muffler and will be making my own exhaust w/o cats. Should help out a lot. Removing the muffler has already added 10+ hp. I modded my airbox and it seems to have more grunt on the highway. Sounds a lot better also. A lot deeper and throatier sound. Have an electric fan from an oldsmobile that I will be installing shortly, how much power increase did you notice? I'm expecting 5-10hp but thats just a guess. My 3.0 is a 90 model so it doesnt have a maf sensor in the air tube. Maybe you could take an ecu and an air tube from an earlier model aerostar and do without the maf sensor. Who knows?

Eh, the MAF sensor is a good thing. The tube is just an oddity in that it splits into a pair of tubes and then rejoins, all while the tube itself is not smooth on the inside. Probably helps with noise. The IAT mod is basically putting a small resistor somewhere in the temperature sensor and getting a bit richer mix IIRC.

I have a panel k&n filter so I'll probably mod the lower part of the airbox like you said this weekend. The electric fan seems to have upped the hp a bit, I only put it on a couple days ago, so I haven't really gotten a good feel for how much yet. As far as the IAT mod it is just a resistor wired inline with the Intake air temperature sensor, it makes the computer think incomeing air is cooler and richens the air fuel mixture. It also makes the computer use a more aggressive timing curve. I used a 5.6kohm 1/2watt resistor from radio shack, it cost about 99 cents I believe.

I think my fan clutch may be going bad, could you give me more info on the electric fan install? Do you remove the fan clutch completley & replace it with the electric fan? Where do you draw electricity from? Also, I live in Florida, will the electric fan keep up with the heat?

Thanks

The electric fan will actually work better in Florida if you get the appropriate size/thermostat, since it's a constant speed/airflow rather than based on engine RPM (keep cooler in traffic)

What size fan do you think is appropriate (inches or cfm)? I have a 3.0 extd with dual air. I have never changed my theromastat, but the gauge runs between the n & o in "normal".

Thanks for the response

I removed my silencer cone and made another hole in the air box today. Then I went on a fairly long drive to visit a friend. Seemed to make a pretty good difference at highway speeds, especially with the way I drive

Glad the little airbox mod helped. It makes the engine a bit noisier, but I could care less.

For the fan, get the biggest one that can fit! It also makes a diff w/AC effectiveness.
