Steering Column

I am thinking of changing my existing steering column to a tilt column. Need extra room for more beer. What is involved and what brand of column is easist to adapt to existing steering box. Also i would like to add power steering at the same time. Any suggestions. About how much would all this cost?

the whole nine yards

Ididit chrome tilt column with cruise built in......... $ 800
removing the Volare IFS you shouldn't have used...?????
heidt's Mustang II IFS with power rack............... $2200
steering wheel of your choice............................ $ 300
assorted u-joints and shafts to connect.............. $ 250

but that's only one route you can take....

seriously.. you can find a salvage yard tilt unit from 50 bucks and up
if it's not worn out...

power steering ??? you staying with the straight axle or going ifs ???
price range is wide

are you going to shift on the column or from the floor ???

ford van units work well.... mid 80's chevy sedan columns work and are about the right length...

lots of questions need to be answered before a good decision can be made here..

My truck is a 48 F1. I want to keep the straight axle front end. I was hoping to find a column at local salvage yard. How much modifications would i have to do to column and also to the truck? Can i find a power steering unit that will work with stock front end?

John, my feelers get all twisted up when you talk bad about Volare front ends. And here I was thinking I was doing such a good job on my truck.

55,

Don't pay any attention to John. Next month he will want a Dakota... Just keep plugging along on your Volare. It's lookin' good...

John does have a dark side, doesn't he. Too bad he can't maintain that flow of energy for the support of good, wholesomeness, and the American way. Volare IFS are great. All those readers working on Volare grafts, stay the course and don't be led astray! John

My 51 has a caddy tilt, between that the seville seat and the tank behind the seat......I had to cut out beer . I am changing to an Ididit column, late model Expedition seats and the tank is going under the bed. That way I can include beer back into my diet

Seriously, if you have a thinner seat that I do about any of the tilts will work, the van is a good choice or some of the gm columns. One thing to keep in mind if you are rewiring is most wiring kits are set for gm columns. I am changing to the Ididit column because I want to go keyless and mine needs the turn signal switch rebuilt and to do that the parts are almost 1/2 of the cost of a new column.

from the negative post on the dark side.....

guys...guys...guys...

I never said Volare was bad.... I just said it was a bad choice for me ! I've ridden and driven Volare equiped trucks and they are great riding... I would have left mine in...but I wanted to steer and have cool looking headers

Bent bar boys have faith.... keep on your path and you will be rewarded with a smooth ride and infinite adjustability... a great reward for such a ugly ifs

Thanks for info and interesting conversation. I am doing necessary things now like brakes, cooling system, wiring. Tilt column is part of my wish list along with new paint.

If you are re-wiring now is the time to change the column. Everything is wired through the colu,m...lights, turn sigs, hour, cruise, and the ignition

John, I have to admit the Volare IS one ugly IFS, but I'll put up with a lot of ugliness for a smooth ride and I don't have a tilt front end like you, so I can keep my Volare IFS and all it ugliness hidden away...

I have to agree with Bill. You certainly do not want to wire your truck and then change the column later if you can avoid it. The column is the center point for the wiring system.

Just as a practical matter I would do the whole rewire as step 1. Then after you try the lights, blinkers, etc and are satisfied that you did everything correctly, put in the column as step 2. Otherwise, what if you do it all as one process and something doesn't work right. Is it the new wiring or is it the new column? This scenerio would be much harder to diagnose. Just my 2 cents worth. I am trying to set priorities by need and money. The re-wire is a necessity. To many wires going who knows were. I would like to both at same time but don't know if i can.

Terry, I certainly agree on the brakes and I understand priorities. However, if you don't do the column now you will be doing a lot of the wiring all over again later. Nobody should have to go through that twice. If I were setting the priority and wanted to replace both the column and wiring, I'd have to make the column number one and wiring number two...
