Front Wheel bearing torque spec

92 Ford Explorer 4wd. I read in the Haynes manual that the front wheel bearing torque is only 16 in/lbs. I torqued my front wheel bearing to 16 inch pounds and there was about an 1/8" play in the wheel (up and down). If I tighten the nut to the next notch, there is no wheel play at all. Since there is about a 1/4" between notches on the nut, moving the nut to the next notch brings the torque up to about 10 ft/lbs. Is this too tight? Will it burn out the wheel bearing?

Should say tighten to 35 ft-lb then back off and then tighten to 16 in-lb. Give it a good rotation before you back off. Many have not done this and found the wheel very loose the next time they checked. The extra force insures everything gets seated.

Talking Here's a hack

I made a shim out of a soup can lid. I didn't have any shim stock. It moved the nut out just a little. That was enough to put just a small amount of torque on the nut and have the slot line up.
This is a non-rotating part so I split the shim to make cutting it out easier.
