Without any info at hand I'd say a '70 460. Pollution controls came in heavy after that and performance dropped. If I remember right some police cars came with 460's then, they'd be the one I'd look for.
There are thick web and thin web blocks, as well as some blocks that can go .120 over and some that barely squeek by to .060 over. Ultrasonic "Sonic" testing is the best way to verify the safe bore capability of a block.
Thick web refers to a portion of the main web where the cap attaches. The thicker ones are D0VE-A 2 and 4 bolt, D1VE-6010-AA 2 and 4 bolt. These blocks are thick all the way [from where the main bolts attach] to the pan rail. These thin web blocks are C8VE, C9VE, D1VE (sometimes no suffix), D3VE and so on. These blocks neck down from the cap register to the pan rail. They need a splayed cap with a 3/8 bolt or a CJ vertical bolt.
Take a look here to get pictures and descriptions of the various 460 blocks.
im looking for more of a specific year. i dont know if all the mounts on the block are the same throught the years but if it is different that may be a problem. im trying to mount it in my 74' f-100 and then back it with a C6 i need to know if any one year has a stronger crank or better flowing heads ect..... i appreciate the info on the block i will keep that in mind.
Cranks are all the same
Blocks are basicly all the same aside from web thickness, rail thickness, bore-ability, 2-bolt or 4-bolt.
c8, c9, do, and d3 heads are considered best factory iron, the exception to this is the DOOE-R (the SCJ). The SCJ head has a larger intake port. The SCJ also has one of the (as cast) screwed up exhaust ports. The SCJ head can be ported to support about 670 hp, the others mentioned can be ported to support approx 600.
All blocks have the same mount boss.
