all i can help you on is, make it stout! use a combo of channel, 3/16-3/8 plate. and use some 6"channel to bolt/weld it to the frame. i say bolt it down with some 8s, and then weld around it to make sure its on there good. deffinately put a reciever in the front, and a few of those half ring with a blot through it......what are those called??....typer hooks and such. just make it look like you want it to, and then make sure its sturdy. also make sure the winch is securely mounted, and the bumper reenforced to handle it.
then use some tubing to make a nice gaurd for the front. ive always liked those.
i was gonna buy a truck one time that had a custom snow plow bumper on it. and it looked awesome, i thought it would have been perfect for a winch. it had a brush guard type setup attached to it...u would also never mess up yer front end in a wreck. u would be able to tear up anything with that sucker! it kind of had a v-shaped center that would be a good mount for a winch. main thing is to have alot of steel and put some diamond plate sheets over the center section for an extra cool look
if i were to build one it would be like that, u could easily mount a winch and lights on that thing with plenty of impact protection...if yur into that whole hitting trees thing when u are comin out of a mud hole ...
yur right texan. and i was half joking when i said the tree thing (although it has happened to me). i wouldnt go around hitting trees obviously but i personally like the comfort of steel up front...hitting deers, offroading, etc. but u do want some good strong steel up front if u are mounting a winch! and no yur frame wont get bent up by just having that weight up there...unless u run into trees on a regular basis
For ideas on how to make front or rear winch bumpers, check out www.reunel.com. These guys make ultra-heavy duty winch bumpers out of plate and channel steel.
If you are handy with a chop saw, torch and welder you can make yourself something similar.
As Idiomaticman mentioned, make it stout! Figure that the bumper has to be tough enough to take a 9000# sideways pull and that the winch itself will weigh in at 125# or better. Plan on using 150# plus of steel on that bumper.
I'll get some pics in my gallers as soon as I can of the prototype that I am working on with my buddy........he's working on designs for front bumpers and winch mounting systems for ranchhand - they are going to try and open up a line of bumpers and stuff for the mid-size and compact trucks based off of his designs and what he comes up with.
thanks guys, my dad owns a machine shop, with every metal working tool and welder in the world in it and getting that much steel is a problem. iv been told that the model of f250 i have has a real weak front frame, so ill take that into consideration.
