hey everybody! i am new to diesels nad have some questions. i am looking at a 1994 f350, standeard trans, 4 door that is 4x4. the engine is not the original 7.3 turbo, it is a naturally aspirated diesel. according to a title search, someone changed the engine in 2002. the truck is really clean and does not have any fluid leaks. i have always wanted a 4 door diesel and am really excited but i want to know what kind of gas mileage i can expect. the odometer says 231,850 but that is for the original engine. how long can i expect the engine to be dependable, roughly. the reason i'm asking is my dad says the ford diesel is the best on the market for dependability and power but this one is not original, does it make a difference? my other choice is an extended cab 1992 cummins turbo diesel with auto tranny and 2 wheel drive. any info would be good. oh yeah, i'm just using it to drive back and forth to work which is 150 miles each way.
I suppose that the "new" engine is an 7.3 ltr, right?
Yes, it's a good engine. I don't know whether it is the best like your dad says.
Have a look to the right coolant additiv.
To your question about your gas mileage...I think 18 mpg is to be expect....
Yours could have been any one of the three. Someone here could tell you from the VIN number what it was originally.
Now to your question - do you know why the engine was replaced and at what mileage? Do you know if it was a reman engine, a factory crate (new) engine or a used one? Do you know if a good shop did the job? Do you know if the clutch was replaced while the engine was out?
If you can get a little more information you can make a better decision and others can offer better advice. There is no reason to pass on this truck out of hand unless there is evidence the engine replacement was not done properly.
