The VIN plate on the door doesn't match the one on the registration. I've looked for a number on the frame and can't find it. I looked on the right top of the frame rail in front of the motor mount and saw none.
Any ideas where it would be on this old '71 truck?
BillFX... the VIN on the frame is on the passenger side frame, near the motor mount. Usually on these babies they are covered in rust, dirt and grime, so take a can of gunk or wd-40 and a cloth with you to spray it down and scrub. Took me about 3 hits with gunk and a minute of elbow grease to rub it down enough for me to read it.
The VIN plate on the door probably means that your door has been replaced sometime in the last 33 years. It is possible or the DMV made a typo... are the numbers off pretty bad or pretty close?
The vin on the registration is off because they show 4 letters when there are only 3 after the numbers. The numbers on the registration are no where close to the numbers on the door.
Are the numbers stamped in front of the xmember on the top of the frame rail?
Next week, after I get back from the Long Beach Grand Prix, I'll clean the rail and look.
That number should be about 3-6" ahead of the crossmember. Not sure what you meant about letters and numbers but it should look roughly like this example- F10YCL20000. The last six digits give a rough idea of the build date.
try this website, fill out the request with your VIN data. Also, in the request ask them to supply you with all the data plate information, as it was lost. It says it takes a few weeks, I got mine in about 3 weeks. Good Luck. This website works with all FORD vehicles too.
