As most of you know from previous posts I have a really crappy Ramsey (yes Buzz it is crap!) winch and am looking to get rid of it...prolly just throw it away, lol.
i am looking at an older Ramsey hydraulic winch on the back of a tow truck. it seems it has never had any problems and looks as if it still works (spool still freespools easily). My questions is if I get it off what would I need to do to hook it up? I have never messed with a hydro winch before but from what I have read I tap into my p/s pump and it pumps off that. think I could order the adapter kit from MileMarker and it might work? any suggestions, links, or tips would really help me out.
the reason i am interested in it is b/c i have wanted to try a hydro winch and I know the owner of the place pretty well (he has pulled me out more than once, lol) and I think he would give me a pretty good deal. i will gfet some pics of it tonight and post them up in my gallery!
thats awesome fishy. i wouldnt mind havin hydro, however, like you i dont know a hell of a lot about em ...probly why i dont have one. all i know is that they are real beasts. i think you will probably need to do alot of power changes to your truck depending on how thirsty the sucker is. i think ivans new setup is awesome. you may want to designate separate power components to that winch! ive heard they can run off ps pumps too. i wonder if u would need a bigger pump? u still running a stock one? just a thought! sorry i cant help ya much on the subject tho.
while on the subject of winches...anyone know where i can get a winch for my atv?? got dogged out in our mudhole and pushed/dug/throttled it out myself...in cakey a$$ mud that went well above my knees. usually those situations are fun, but i was hardheaded enuff to go through it like 5 times which means i had to do all that 5x! plus i just built a new trail on the side of a huge hill and toward the bottom is a huge sink hole and crick! would be cool to have insurance
Jason, I have very little personal experience with hydro winches but one thing I do know is they tend to really heat up your fluid (friend had one) so be sure to install a fluid cooler when you put it in or you'll burn up your poor stock Ford pump. Actually you may want to consider buying a cooler/filter combe like the one sold by Howe, only not that much money. Call Sean (Station) and see what he can hook you up with, should only run about $30 through him if I remember right.
Or thought #2 is to run a seperate Saginaw pump for the winch, several guys are doing this. To be honest though I doubt it's really that necessary as you're generally not going to be doing a lot of steering while you pull. And I hate more clutter than is needed.
I would upgrade to the canned ham (saginaw) and add a cooler like Ivan mentioned. It'll shorten the life of your pump a little but safeguards like the saginaw and cooler should make it pretty happy. I love the power of hydro...just not the fact that if your engine is dead so are you. Sounds like a plan Fishy...
ok i feel stupid for asking this but if i were to go looking for a saginaw pump what vehicles would i look for? is any one model better than another?
I think i am gonna go ahead and put a saginaw pump and aux cooler on my truck anyways, what the hell! keep me busy!
Pretty much any GM vehicle or older (late 70's early 80's) Ford car, the big boat type. Also late 70's Ford vans used these pumps. If you can find a van with the same size engine as yours the bracketry will bolt right up, that's your best bet if you can.
Fishy, I call it a canned ham, because the pump is litterly the size and shape of a canned ham. Black, all metal of course. Nothing like our stockers. Mines from a van but Ivan told you the other places to look.
guess i will look for one tom! thanx guys. that helps a lot! where you think i should mount the hydraulic lever? i was thinking in the cab, but i dunno!

EDIT: o yea....and how should i go about plumbing this beast? will the adapter kit from MM work?

Don't tempt me to buy one and find out. I was going to put a Saginaw in my truck but got sick of fighting with bracketry. I just put in a $12 stock pump to hold me over until I can find a van with a 460.
Jason, I couldn't tell you what to do with the plumbing but I've found that it's typically easier just to take your whole setup to a hose/hydraulic shop and let them sort it out. Otherwise you're always screwing with fittings and matching threads up, etc. Can be a real PITA.
