i don't know how much money you want/don't want to spend and how much hassle your willing to go thru to intall this winch...but you can get a NEW milemaker 9000# with hoses, valves and fittings delivered to your door for around $700 with warranty that is designed to work off the power steering pump. The tow truck ramsey might run off a PTO from transmission...? PTO stuff can get expensive. Also you can check out winchesplusDOTcom....they have power steering pumps, coolers and filters desinged to be used with winches....they also have milemarkers. I don't work for them just ran into them while shopping for my new milemarker 12000#, actually bought mine from e-winchesDOTcom...best price I could negotiate. Anyway, what ever way you go have fun!
Fishy, why do you keep calling Ivan, Tom? Am I missing something? I also believe that fishy said the tt winch was a hydraulic, not a pto. Ptos are gear driven. Always thought one of those would be nice too but they have the same drawback as a hydro...the mills gotta be spinning.
Yeah proeliator you're right....I went off on a tangent with the PTO stuff.....hydro or electric both have drawbacks....if the mill ain't spinning neither is the alternator and battery won't last long...maybe 3 minutes at full load if your lucky. If the mill is spinning hydro will pull all day....electric just until she gets too hot. As with everything else it depends on the primary use for the winch, type of vehicle etc. Up until now I've always owned electric....looking forward to something new.
569104,
well i would love to be able to go out and drop $700 on the table for a ready to bolt-in kit and then ride out.....BUT, seeing that i am a full time student (supposedly) I do not have much time for working. I am tired of skool and trying to get out ASAP. The reason this winch is so appealing is b/c I know the guy pretty good and i am sure he will give a good deal (prolly $50 - $75 for winch and lines) but I will have to check with him tom (yes tomorrow, lol sorry Pro, didn't mean to confuz you)! He also has a few ford vans and older ford cars I am gonna check out to see if they harbor a Saginaw! Thanx for the reply's fellas!
no problem...i understand, i too was once a full time student...just thought this could be a hassel and once you figure in your time ($ per hr) finding parts, new cable, fabricating, installing, etc...you could exceed $700 or so.....but hey have at it, have fun and good luck....let us know how you do.
i enjoy everything you mentioned except spending money It challenges my skill level and makes me think harder (scarey huh? lol) basically here is a critque of your post....i am just replying.
1) I have found most of the parts I will need
2) I have a brand new AmSteel Blue rope that mom has for me for my b-day
3) fabricating/installing = i am making a bumper in my welding class and using their equipment and i have quite a bit of help with some very experienced welders...not to mention I am getting 3/8" thick steel I-beam i am upgrading to for strength to match my rear bumper.
so all in all the time is money thing is true but i have no classes on fridays nor do i have work on fridays so i will be doing most of my work then.
on another note.....I have found 3 'canned hams' in my buddies j-yard! and I have exciting news....there is one in a '81 1 ton ford ambulance with a 460 So i am gonna try to work up a deal when i see him (still wasn't there) for the winch and saginaw and all the bracketry for both for about $50 or so.
Ack...I gotta stop posting when I'm brainfried late at night Thats kinda funny, cuz I was tripping out on that.
Sounds like you are good to go, Fishy. So many guys like to switch to the sags you could probably ****** up all that he has and sell the extras on ebay. Nice deal on the ambulance...Ivans dead on that it can be a pain to cobble these together, much better to find it all intact.
I dunno, Aggy might be onto something. An ambi on a 4x4 platform would be cool...especially with the lights and siren going as it went through the bog
Fish, if you happen to find a second set of 460 brackets for the Sag let me know and I'll buy them off you. I've had a hell of a time finding them in Spokane, though I'm not in a big rush right now.
o im definately onto something
haha imagine pulling up in the school parking lot in an 81 ford ambulance with a 460 straight piped pushin some 44in boggers!
damn if only i was rich and could blow money on all kinds of rigs
Well, stopped by today and he was there this time.....but to my disappointment i got my hopes up! he is gonna use the motor that i wanna get the pump from so he doesn't wanna part it out and the tow truck he says is gonna rebuild it so he doesn't wanna get rid of the winch
so i am back at square one! actually i think i have moved back to square -1....i had high hopes!
thanx for all the replies and help, i have learned quite a bit and i will get a hydro winch as my next contender for my front bumper! oh well....life goes on.
