I just purchased an 89 F250 with the 460 EFI and Auto transmission. It runs rought at idle and has little power. I started pulling plug wires and found no RPM decrease in the rear two cylinders on the right side. I did a compression check on the rear cylinder and found little or no compression. This leads me to believe the head gasket is leaking between the two cylinders. Is this common or is it more likely the head is cracked between the two? There is no coolant in the oil and no oil in the coolant. I have an older (carburated) 460 that I was going to rebuild as well as a gasket set. What if any parts are interchangeable between the older (late 70s) 460s and the newer fuel injected? If the head(s) are bad I know the ones on the other engine are good but am not sure if they will work. Any surprises I should be watching for when disassembling this engine? Thanks in advance, John.
From what I have heard (I never have delt with the EFI 460) the heads from your EFI engine will not accept a standard carb intake. The blocks are identicle in all practicle senses. The heads and intake can be replaced with any of the 60's/70's/80's carb heads and intakes. The major change is that some are internally ballanced 460's and some years are externally. All of my experiance is with the internally ballanced.
I used an older block for my efi build up, fordtruckpuller is right the heads won't accept a carbureted intake. As long as you just want to switch your block to all of the other newer stuff you will be ok. All engines 78 and older are internally balanced and 79 and newer are externally balanced, you can tell by the counterweight behind your balancer on external engines and only a spacer on others. You may want to stay with your newer model internals (crank and rods) because your truck engine will have more desirable truck rods, unless your other engine is also a truck engine.
I purchased a rebuilt EFI 460 off of ebay for $900 , It runs great. I would just pull the heads and take a look, you can buy an older gasket kit off of ebay for $40, and then just buy the intake set at napa for $30. My guess is the gasket is blown, Cheap fix
