Front axle U-joint
92 Explorer, 4WD. How do you change the inner u-joint on the passanger side front axle. Can you remove the axle without taking the carrier apart? Is there a C-clip holding it in? Is it possible to change the u-joint without removing the axle. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That inner shaft (often called the stub shaft) cannot be removed without removing the differential from I-beam because of a C-clip inside the differential. I don't think you have to undo anything inside the carrier, just need to separate the differential from the beam and drop it to expose the C-clip. I've heard of people managing to change that u-joint with the stub shaft in place. Others say it isn't really that hard to drop the differential, and, on a '92, it might be worth the extra effort to inspect the differential and replace the fluid.
