Just finished a 1000 mi trip with wife's Expy towing a 1500 (empty) then a 6200 lb load. After pulling a grade, the "off" light on the overdrive lockout switch on the shifter started blinking. Shortly, I felt sluggish response at low speed, and no reverse gear.... The tranny shifted normally once up to speed and went into overdrive and all other forward gears...
Does anyone know what the blinking light is and where I should start with the transmission dagnosis?
(Yes, fluid level was fine and not burnt).
Also, what tranny might I have? It is a 99 with 330 c.i.d. V-8 and Auto 4WD. Was well within tow limits with the tow package, tranny cooler, oil cooler, etc.; also 3.73 gears.
Thanks in advance-
you may have damaged the transmission pulling that load. do you know what the maxuium towing capacity is for the expedition? i cant help you with the tranny diagonis but you might try getting a reapir manaul for it it should have tranny diagonis.
OK, I researched a bit more and thanks to this site I have found out it is a 4R100 trans (E on the door sticker).
I have pulled greater loads across country with it before; it is rated for 8600/ 8800 tow capacity if I remember correctly. I will look for a manual, but if the tranny is toast then I don't want to shell out $50 for the shop manual when I will just be R&Ring the trans anyway with a rebuilt one.
This is a reason why my other vehicles all have manual transmissions!
Will a code reader decipher the problem with the blinking light? The reverse gear is screwed up- I tried to pull the Expy backwards, and the tranny is locked up in N and R; and without a normal transfer case ( I have the electronic dash switch) I can't put the T case in neutral. So will have to pull thedriveline to move the darn thing....
Any tranny guys know anything about the 4R100?
Well it is in the shop now and we'll see what the damage is...
I wonder now if it might be the transfer case- I don't understand why it wouldn't go in reverse at all- something was locking up/binding because the truck would not even roll back in neutral. Hd to two it backwards in neutral w/ my Bronco and it slid the tires.
