Just finished a 1000 mi trip with wife's Expy towing a 1500 (empty) then a 6200 lb load. After pulling a grade, the "off" light on the overdrive lockout switch on the shifter started blinking. Shortly, I felt sluggish response at low speed, and no reverse gear.... The tranny shifted normally once up to speed and went into overdrive and all other forward gears...
Does anyone know what the blinking light is and where I should start with the transmission dagnosis?
(Yes, fluid level was fine and not burnt).
Also, what tranny might I have? It is a 99 with 330 c.i.d. V-8 and Auto 4WD. Was well within tow limits with the tow package, tranny cooler, oil cooler, etc.
Thanks in advance-
The blinking light is the transmission version of a "Check Engine" light. It does not point to any one specific transmission fault to the exclusion of others. Clearly something's up. When was the transmission fluid last changed?
Uh-oh, busted! About 40K ago. I have been overseas on deployment and it was a maintenance oversight on my part. Still, the fluid looked fine and didn't smell burnt, and 10K over shouldn't hurt THAT much...
Now it is still pink but has some dark tint to it...
I had the same problem with my 96 Bronco - changed the fluid and haven't seen it since. Only difference is that my fluid only had 12K miles on it. Seemed *real* thin though, so just decided to change it before going any further. Paid off.
If you still have a record of your last transmission fluid change, check it to see if the right fluid was used. There have been many of these trannys with the wrong ATF used and it takes alot of miles for the damage to be done.
IF you have driven through a Large Mud Puddle at any speed, you may also want to change the filter...
The Valve Body Springs are very tempermental... ANY contaminants and it doesn't like to shift into 3rd.... The Group that does the XE drives (Harrisonburg VA) ALWAYS have 1 or 2 trucks limp home due to transmission troubles (and being the most insane of the bunch it always includes me!!)....
So.... Drain the Fluid and Change the Filter (about $15)... see if that fixes it
Hope it's not the case in your instance!! But when I owned my 2000 Expy it turned out to be a broken spring somewhere in the tranny and a $400.00+ repair bill. Mostly labor of course . You might just need to go ahead and have it diagnosed and fix the problem before it can get possibly worse.
