a couple times now that its cold my truck has winned while parked and idleing and running.ive got a 2002 f350. its due for an oil change but now that irts cold the truck seems to whine once and a while. the whine is like when the power stearing is low and you are turning the wheel slow. when its doing it it does it iddleing and moving straight and in turns. checked all fluids and are ok. today it did it all day off and on, but not tonight on the way home. any help?
I am not really familiar with the psd engines. I am just now experiencing the power stroke for myself, previously had 7.3 litre engine. Perhaps there is gear noise in the drive train for the pumps and accessory drive of the engine being caused by the engine oil being thickened by the temp difference.
Is there any other symptoms, like trans noise, shifting or anything like that?
I would double check the power steering unit again. I had to add a couple oz just the other day on my 01. Done the very same thing. Some days It would wine sometimes not. It finally got to the point where it would wine all the time. I looked for leakes but didn't see any so I'am jest guessing that factory didn't fill it full.
over and out

Is this a cold start in temps below 40 Degrees. If so it may be the waste gate. If the truck is cold it will close to recycle exhaust to heat the block.
no i am used to the exhaust noise and valve.
yes, the powersteering is low. i put a liitle in and the noise went away so far, three runs so far. the cap was half on and wasnt cmpletly closed so some problebly came ouit. there is no fluid splashed ouy that i can see, maybe low from factory? i may have put to much in,im not sure,it was a little dark.
I am actually dealing with the same issue on my 2002 Excursion PSD. I thought it was the belt , sprayed some belt-lube on it , but the noise came back. Gonna check the powerstearing fluid level when i get home.
There is a TSB on my 00 SD PS about a whinny power steering when cold. I took my truck and the TSB to the dealer and they said they didnt here the whine. It was 70 degrees when I took it in. They said bring it back when its cold out they would check it again. The fix is a new power steering line with a muffler in it,(ford calls it a tuning cable). I just live with the whine now that my truck is out of warranty.
