Old Route 66 - anybody done the whole thing?
My in-laws made the whole trek in a 67 firebird conv. that he restored. They said they had a great time. I told him I want to do it in my 72 when I get done with it. He said to run 66 then come home and paint the truck. His paint got trashed.

Old Route 66 - anybody done the whole thing?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-May-02 AT 12:07 PM (EST)]Boy this is really goin to date me...
Having relatives in both California and Ohio my family would travel at least two times a year along Route 66. There were times that we would cut down through Kentucky, Tennesee, Arkansas and catch the route in Oklahoma.
I was very young, but remember vividly some of the landmarks and cities along the route. When we have traveled recently to cities along the route, I come across areas that I remember and know like the back of my hand, remembering but not actually knowing at a child where I was at. It's strange how much you pick up when you are young.
I actually remember parts of the "new" Interstate 40 being built.
My family truly enjoyed making the trip from Ohio to California and back. And now I can appreciate that I have actually had the opportunity to travel along this wonderful route in it's entire!
I would like to plan a trip and take our new T-Bird across the route. I think it would be a blast to show my husband the road that his wife travelled when she was young and show him the history of Route 66!
As always Greywolf, you start some thought provoking threads!
Thanks

Old Route 66 - anybody done the whole thing?
While in route from Camp LeJeune,NC to Camp Pendleton,CA the bus I wa
riding picked up 66 in Oklahoma and followed it all the way to L.A.
During a dinner break in Amarillo the driver pointed out a popular
eatery where we could find decent food. I ordered Chili and a beer,
well when the waitress placed my order in front of me I must of had
an odd look on my face and she asked if there was a problem, I replied
by asking "where are the beans?" With a scowl she asked where i was
from, upon replying Florida, she immediately removed my bowl of chili
all the while muttering under her breath that if I wanted beans that
is what I should have asked for. I did finally get a bowl of chili
plus an education of the fine art of chili preparation. Needles to
say everyone within hearing got a big kick out of this and a good
natured laugh at this (then) young Marine.
This was not my last trip traveling 66, just the first, and each
time there has been some memorable experience.

I have only driven parts of it in Oklahoma. It's nostalgic. Kinda sad to see some of the old abandoned gas stations and mom an pop stores closed down along the way.
Wouldn't it be cool if someone organized an annual "FTE Route 66 Run"?!?! You can bet I'd be there for at least the Oklahoma portion of it.
