I have a 1996 Ranger 3.0, 5 spd extended cab. The clutch recently started grabbing with the clutch pedal fully depressed. It doesn't do it all the time. When it does, I cannot go from neutral to any gear without first turning off the engine. It is like the clutch is not releasing at all. I have 129000 mi on it and plan to change the clutch later (have a kid learning to drive and wanted to let her learn before installing a new clutch) but this seems to be forcing my hand. What would cause this? There is no pattern to when it does or doesn’t grab. The clutch works fine otherwise. Thanks for any advice

I just went thru this situation on a friend of mines Ranger; it was the pilot bearing. You may as well plan on replacing the rest of the clutch while you're in there due to the labor involved, but do look at and evaluate the parts once you have it apart. Are you getting some noise with this problem, like squealing?

I JUST FIXED THE SAME PROBLEM! well it sounds very very similar.... every now and then i will put my truck into gear and it will go? but sometimes it wont? turned out that i was low on clutch fluid and i got some air in the lines.... so sometimes it would and sometimes it wouldnt.. get your haynes manual out and bleed the clutch first.... always start with the cheap and easy.... then go from there. hopefully it is something as stupid as my headache! goodluck
Hopefully it is as TotallyRoosted said. I ended up having to replace both the master and the slave cylinder because the seals would leak pressure and just not have enough force to fully disengage the clutch.
Had a full clutch jobs about 10k miles ago. Clutch, pilot bearing, slave, etc. Had problems afterwards, clutch occasionally wouldn't disengage, couldn't get in to gear or anything. Ended up having to replace master cylinder also. In the end, total came to around $950....
Thanks everyone, I think I'll replace all the clutch stuff (pilot and throw-out bearings, clutch disc, and pressure plate. Will probably have the flywheel turned also and replace the slave cylinder while I have the tranny off.
This extract from the sticky in the Ranger forum may help Fixing leaky plugs on a 5 speed. The pic is taken from the rear of the tranny, looking forward, and on the top of the tranny. See those three black plugs? They're the ones to jettison.
