rear main seal replacement
my question is, is this seal replaced like the 5.0 by any chance? dealer here wants $500 to replace it, but i would rather do it if i can. not interested in removing the engine!
thanks in advance for any help.
Ben

What year is your truck?
Did your dealer check it out and say it's the rear main seal?
A more common leak would be a head gasket. Usually that can be seen above the starter.
To replace the rear main seal it is much like a later model 5.0.
You have to remove either the engine or transmission
no i haven't had it to the dealer yet. i will crawl back under and look around the starter. i just say the oil near the rubber plug on the bottom of the auto and thought of the rear seal. it is a '99 xlt.
so i just remove the transmission, pull the old out, oil up the new one and slide it back in? no oil pan removal or anything else?
I've got a 2001 Supercrew(small V8) and I'm not sure if the seal is my problem. I'm losing oil, not smoking, grayish residue on the Oil cap when I screw it out. I get a sputter on light excelleration. I've been told it's the main seal but they recommended I sell the truck as opposed to fixing it. Of course I was weary of that answer, but it did not come from a Ford Dealer because they usually charge so much just to analyze. Any thoughts?
