My 94' A4WD (99,000mi) aerostar transmission has been giving me greif by shifting hard and whining excessivly. I checked the fluid levels and they appear to be in the proper zone. I noticed when I wiped off the dipstick that the color of the fluid was brown/black but it did not smell burnt. Could old tranny fluid cause the problems im experiencing and if so what is the best way to change the fluid?
Thanks
I would change the fluid and the filter. Chances are the filter is plugged up a bit. Do a search on here and you should find what you are looking for. Good luck!
I had the same problem in mine, changed the filter and ran a transmission flush on it. A trans flush is really the best way to change out the fluid, you only get maybe 1/3 of the fluid out with just dropping the pan and changing the filter.
I was going to change fluid in mine but some guy told me that if the fluid has never been changed and I doubt it has that he knows of people that had failers after the change. Do you all believe that? I am talking about high milers.
It can happen, but I've also done it to my own high milleage cars. I've never had a problem with my own 115000 miles or so, but on customers cars at work we make them sign a waiver about that problem if they're past 70,000 miles without a record of a change at our store. The cars I've seen fail after the service were close to 200000. I'd do it if I was you but be aware that there is a risk. Best of luck.
i have a 1997 eletronic4wheel drive it has 145,000miles and i drive it like my f-250 (390 4speed) i havent touched my transmission fluid but i did add a quartonly one i would check the fluid levels and leave it alone add some if needed do not change if over 100,000
