Hi all,
My 95 250 PSD left me strainded about 200 miles from here (60,000 miles on truck) and I had to have the truck hauled home to keep from going to a dealer. If I had had a code reader, I would have known what the problem was and could have fixed it there. Any ideas on what is the most inexpensive code reader for the 95 PSD.
BTW it was the camshaft position sensor. My brother-in-law had one go out on his 2000 550 PSD at about 50,000 miles. Is this a common thing or are we just lucky?
I got a code reader from Mac Tools for $18. The cam position sensor failure is pretty common. Sometimes, when they crap out on you they don't even set a code. A lot of guys keep an extra in their glove box as a spare.
Joe, that sounds like a good thing to have in my breakdown kit. I keep a fuel filter, air filter, oil filter, oil, engine belt, tire plugs and a gallon of coolant plus a few tools. Where is the cam position sensor located and what is it's aprox cost? Any other roadside replacement parts you recommend?
The cam position sensor is located on the front cover and is attached with one 8 mm cap screw (takes a 10 mm wrench). It has a metal tab on it which acts as a timing indicator. If you buy your parts from International instead of Ford you can save some money. The cam sensor from International is about $85.
Thanks Joe,
Could you give any part number or other information on the code reader? I will add a new sensor to my spare parts also. Are there other sensors that will shut you down like that? I plan to travel in another couple years with this truck, but don't want any more surprises. Also thanks for the tip on the sensor from International. A dealer price is around 177.00 with most after market about the same or higher. I found that somewhat strange.
$177 from International?! Is that right? I had no idea they were that expensive! They (International) should sell it to you at cost for designing such a failure prone device instead of making a buttload of money off of their inability to properly design a component!!
I bought my code reader several years ago and all it is is a device that plugs into the diagnostic port and flashes codes on an LED. I'd be surprised if they still make them like that anymore. Check with your local discount auto parts store and see if they have a relitively inexpensive one for the home mechanic.
All of the other sensors will simply throw your computer into open loop if they fail except the cam position sensor and the IPR which you couldn't change by the side of the road anyway.
Joe, I called the local Birmingham, Alabama International Dealership they have the CPS sensor PN 1825899C93 for $94.75. I also called the Ford Dealership where I bought my truck (s), they want $190.22 for the same part in a Ford box. Save almost $100 each. Thanks for the tip, I will go get one this week.
Didn't make myself clear. The Ford Dealer price was $177.00. Guess even dealers don't charge the same price. I called a International dealer today and was quoted $85.00. International was also cheaper on fuel filters. I will always check with them first(just didn't think of it), but after spending $92 for nothing, I will next time. I suspect all of the engine parts are cheaper at International.
Trying to feel good about this truck as we are going to travel a good bit in a year or so. I know I could change the camshaft sensor now in a emergency situation, but in the few manuals I have, I can not find refrence to the IPR. I assume that is something to do with injection. Please advise. Thanks for the info on the other sensors going open loop. I was surprised that there was not a subroutine program when the camshaft sensor went out that would give you some RPM- say maybe 1000. We have been in the mountains where that would not have been good (going down) NO BRAKES. Actually we were in heavy traffic when the cam sensor went out, but with luck was not pulling the travel trailer. I like the truck other than the electronic concerns.
How much stuff does one need to stay away from a dealer as we will be on a fixed income and I think I have the skills to repair the truck?
Thanks Dennis for the tip on Eguus. I will check into that. Had a code reader from them for a 93 Ford (Digital) that was great and just didn't think of them. Also very nice car.
The IPR is not likely to give you any trouble -- don't worry about it. It is located on the back side of the high pressure pump which is mounted to the back side of the front cover in the valley. These trucks pretty much run forever -- until the cam sensor craps out on you.
