I was in the same boat 3-4 months ago, decided if I was going to get a camera, I was going to get a GOOD one. Saved up some more money and just got a Minolta Z1. Great camera!!!!!!!!
I'd say Go with an HP - I know three folks with them (all techies) and that is what I use - best Digital Camera for the dollars in my opinion.
Vivitar = Junk
Olympus = OK
Sony = Overpriced
Before you buy, be sure to shop around.
Just my two cents.
Yeah I actually just bought the HP 945 through work and got some major discounts (350 bucks off and free 256MB SD card!!). It's the 5.3MP with 8x optical/7x digital and is an awesome camera. Definitely one of the best bangs for the buck out there. It's going to get plenty of action at the US Grand Prix in a couple of months!!
I just bought an Olympus 5.0 MP with an extra 128 picture card - paid $299. I haven't figured out how to use all the features yet. I got it to update my gallery.

My new--and first--digital is Fuji FinePix A210. $150 including shipping from online source. It's 3.2 megapixels max, and does more than I'll ever need. Uses AA batteries, but quickly. Save $$ and get a charger with rechargeable Nickel-metal hydride batteries. I paid $10 on sale for charger and 4 batts. Look for a camera that can use the less costly size of batteries. My brother bought a Fuji FinePix A205 (2 megapixels, and he's happy with his camera, too. Comparison shop on the 'net.
I got a cannon powershot A300 as my 10 year anniversary 'gift' from the company that I work for. It's a nice basic camera that takes good pics. Go to epinions.com and do some research. Most of the cameras there have reviews from people that own and have used the camera.
