I have had a problem starting the past few days... I have checked all glow plugs they check out fine. I have checked voltage to glow plugs... 7.2 volts.
Chilton says 6 volts .. Haynes say 12 volts.. Which should it be ??? Have have a momentary switch connected and hold for 8 - 10 seconds.. on first try it want to start... But does not... Eventually does start.. Yesterday I drained water seperator and found about 2 cups water in it... Have not changed fuel filter as of yet... Can anyone help ????

sounds like its fuel realated to me the fuel water sep. sometimes gives prob. try bypassing it with hose conn. also if conserned about glowplugs make sure getting voatage to right and left bank if so take one out hook it up and grd. it and turn on ing. to see if it gets cherry red if so your alright with glowplugs

The Ford shop manual says: "the glow plugs used have a 6-volt rating. By using 6-volt glow plugs the wait time before a cold engine can be started is reduced considerably, since the 6-volt glow plugs heat up extremely fast with 12 volts being applied. When 12 volts is applied to the glow plug, rapid heating of the glow plug tip occurrs......"
How many tries does it take to get it started? Be careful not to run the starter too long. It's pretty easy to let the magic smoke out. It sounds like you've hooked up a pushbutton to run the plugs. Usually 6-8 seconds is plenty of heat, anything past 10 seconds runs the risk of burning the plugs out (especially if they are spark plug brand plugs).
Usaully takes 3 or 4 tries... I do not trip starter for more tan 10 seconds at a time. When I check voltage at glow plugs it reads 7.2 volts to all 8 glow plugs.. Then lots of smoke when started which leads me to believe it is getting fuel and am thinking the problem is related to finding water at the seperator. Which by the way is an aftermarket Napa brand with petcock to drain.
Me wonders if you didnt get a dose of water in the last fueling. Recheck the separator again and see if you dont get more water out. I never fuel if I see the delivery tanker around. They do stir up the bottom of the storage tanks. Does your momentarty action switch bypass the glow plug controller? or does it still run current thru it? Just a thought. Keep us posted.
I have ordered a new seperator from Napa.. and plan on changing both seperator and filter.. Also unsure if switch runs through controller or is bypassed?? How would I tell if this is so??? I am pretty sure my problem at this point is fuel... Once I start it up it is fine.....runs smooth... Just hard to start... I have always bought fuel at the same place... of course this is only 3months that I have had a diesel.. and I always see the Big Rigs and Tri-axles buying at the same place..
do you have any wetness arround injector return cap and does your truck when it starts does it run and few seconds and shut off and how fast is spining when cranking over and if you need and diff filter trie and 1222sp baldwin you will need and plastic water senser or plug to put in bottom of fil. napa can cross no. i asume you have and remote water sep. if your truck is 86 and back
The seperator I got from Napa came with a tree to mount seperator/filter just like regular filter just has a petcock on bottom to drain manually does not have a water sensor in it...
I had planned on draining at each fuel fill but have not had the chance in 3 fills... My own fault... I plan on changing water sperator/filter and fuel filter and will not make same mistake twice.. Once it starts it always keeps running... does not stall and runs smooth .. No wetness in fuel system no wet spots all along return lines or fuel lines...
If you got 2 cups of water out of the seperator, it was probably clear full and let some get in the filter. Or you may have other crud in it.
Also if you are only getting 7 or 8 volts to the glowplugs, have you had your batteries load tested recently?
Remember to unhook one of the battery grounds when you test the batteries so you are testing only one battery at a time.
For you to get low voltage at the glowplugs you have either,
A bad connection at the batteries.
A bad connection at the glowplug relay.
A glow plug relay ready to die.
A weak battery or two.
It could also be a combination of several of the above.
As the battery cells die the starter slows down so slowly over such a long time that you do not notice it till you get them replaced.
No I am 99.9% sure it was water... no smell...... Drained it in a clear container and after about two cups I saw fuel on the bottom... about a quarter of an inch of fuel... at this point is when I could smell the diesel...
Batteries were bought new in January all connections are clean and tight
Starter spins fast.... I do not think the batteries are the problem... any way to check the glow plug relay?? have only ever fueled at one place.. and as I said before I alwasy see the Big Rigs and alot of Triaxles fuel here... Is near a major Highway....

What voltage do you read on the battery terminal of the glow plug relay?
Then have someone push the button and see what it reads as the glowplugs are heating.
If that voltage is also low then after the glowplugs cool a bit, test at the battery where the wire from the glowplug relay hooks to the batteries.
Keep working from the glowplugs back toward the battery.
When you get to the place the reading are the same, you know you just passed the problem connection or wire.
