A friend of mine asked me to cut up a cherry tree that she needed to get rid of, it wasn't big enough to make lumber out of, so we cut it into 16" pieces and I made a fixture to hold the pieces steady so I could run them thru my jointer planer. I collected the chips in plastic grocery bags and we used them for outdoor cooking. Throwing some chips in over the coals before burying the dutch oven (with a turkey stuffed w/almonds,pepper, & rice) makes for some fine eating approx. 8 hrs later!
I've got a pile of copper that I've been waiting to scrap. Last pile went a few years ago when it was .70, then it dropped down. The feedline for cell tower antennas is usually Andrews brand. Made from 99.98% pure Belgium copper. I've got a pile of cut-offs.
I think I had a problem last time with solid strand, tinned, copper ground wire. Anyone know why this would be? The buyer didn't want it. Anyone else been able to sell it?
BTW, I going scrapping today - thanks for the heads up..
I've been known to dumpster dive at a custom woodworking shop. The pieces of wood they throw out as scrap are big enough to keep me in project material for years.
Especially if its a piece of exotic wood.... Heh Heh ... Turn some nice ball point pens from some throw aways....
But back to topic.... Not a scrapper, but I am a collector. I am a garage sale freak. Love to do it. Found a 250 foot roll of underground Romex, 12-3, still in the box at a garage sale a few weeks ago. $5.00. Promptly bought it, and set it aside for a rainy day.
My latest find; got 4 pcs of 5/16ths stainless scrap that measure 30 x 48in. I thought they'd make a good welding table. A friend wants to know how much i'd sell a pcs to his friend and i have know idea what to ask except a token 10$
Everytime i go the the dump i get kinda sad and disgusted at what people throw away,
perfectly good lumber, beautiful old cabinets.
I got turned on to garage sales last summer. Got a perfectly good cordless phone for a buck. it's jsut out of style. T shirts for .50 good for crawling under vehicles.
Me and my brother scrap alot. We get old mufflers and brake rotors from the car shop he works at, old furnaces and airconditioners and what not from this heating and air conditioning shop, and when some of our friends have old cars, axles, what not they will send it our way. It works out great for us because we have a 1968 International Payloader with a v-6 Cummins (great for loading cars and truck frames), 1966 F-600 grain truck with a 330 V8 (big enough to fit a 1979 Trans am on it), and a 1987 F-350 flatbed with a 6.9, and a home made trailer.
Not to mention the stuff you might gather along the way.
Yea right thats what I am hoping for My wife did tell me if I do this project dont bring anything home thats going to be hard. I'm sure some stuff will come home with me.
Not to bump an old thread, but this might belong here. I'm in a small town (~30,000 people) and there's an old house at the end of a street in town that's been empty for a long time and I'm not sure if it's owned by the people next door or nobody at all. I'd like to save the doors from that place before it falls down (this will happen in 5 or 10 years) and I plan on asking the people next door if they know who owns it or would mind parting with the doors. The only thing that makes me think anybody owns it at all is that the people next door keep firewood between the two houses, nearer the abandoned one. The street ends and this place is kind of beyond the end of the street, off to the left. On the other side of the house is nothing, just where floodwaters go if it rains really hard and my guess is that the old place is just 'there,' and forgotten about. Anyway, guess it doesn't hurt to ask.
True, I had thought about going over to city hall or something. I figure by knocking on the neighbors door it gives them a headsup that I'm there and don't have bad intentions. 50/50 shot that anybody would be home anyway, I'd be heading out in the daytime to do this since it's my last week before starting up the new job. Honestly, I'm surprised the city hasn't knocked the place down yet like they've done with 3 abandoned houses only a few blocks away on a more main road. Guess this one's been forgotten because it's off the beaten path.
Odds are it's completely abandoned. I've always wondered about who owns old junk lying around in that case - any ideas?
