This vehicle appears to run normal most of the time, However on 3 occasions it has surged at what seems to be full throtel when the gas petal is touched. Its like your asking for 1200 rpm and you get 3500 rpm. The first time was in a parking lot and you could hear the motor torqe up and feel the frame twist. It only lasts for a couple of seconds which is not enough time to lok at the tach or anything but be surprised. If it does this at the rong time it can be disasterous. Then you are left with your foot bouncing on the gas petal in shock. People around think your a real idiot.
The truck has had a major problem which required the enine to come out and apart when it was new and I suspect the dealer is trying to deny there is still a problem whith it so they dont have to replace it.
It also has eratic guages and lites in the dash
In case you are wondering and I know you are, it was built missing a compression ring, the truck was a special order and it was conveniently warmed up when it was delivered. All the wierdnes started after the dealer monkeyed with it.
Thanks for your input

I am surprised that you got the Ford organization to recognize that a compression ring was omitted and to fix it. How was it diagnosed? was it using oil or was it missing on that one cylinder?
Your problem is probably not the engine but the throttle position sensor (or it could be a glitch in the computer flashing). It may not give you a check engine light. Take it to the dealer and have then check for codes. If there are none tell them you want the throttle position sensor replaced (if they resist, just mention Lemmon Law). And don't worry about blowing the engine. If the throttle goes to high idle and stays there it will not blow up. Just turn the key off. What concerns me is what happens if you are in cruising traffic and it does this? This is a safety issue. Make sure the dealer knows that.

Well it has been back several times sometimes with codes and onc with so many I was told that they couldnt trace them all.
This was a special order truck thatI waited about 3 months for. I never had the chance to start this one cold It was warm when I came in to pick it up Niced of them to do that huh. The next morning when I started it cold it smoked like an oil well on fire. I went back and was told to make sure I used the glow plugsand I wasnt used to a diesel. It also shook if you tried to drive it when cold. When warm you would never notice anything. FirstI was told it was my fuel, the it was an injector then a compression test and they pulled the head.
Unfortunatly they refused to rerplace the engine and did surgurythey however neglected to clean out the block and contaminated the oil with abrasives. they also caused a cascade of problems taking it so far apart.
I wonder how much I have hurt sales when people ask me how I like my gorgeous F350? When I tell my story they are shocked and usualy remark that they will probibly not buy a Ford This can happen to any manufacturer butthe test is how they deal with it. So far Ford is doing miserably. they should bu this one back and start fresh that way people hear something good.

It must have been the top compression ring that was omitted to make it run so badly. The high pressure oil system is very sensitive to swarf contamination. Any significant amount of foreign material (shavings, cast iron dust, etc.) will cause the IPR to stick open causing a no-start condition. If it gets into the H/P rails in the heads it can cause the poppet valve in the injectors to stick open causing the same problem. So, if it is running, I doubt that the contamination of the oil was much of a factor. Did they do all that work with the engine in the chassis or did they pull it out?
I'm sorry to hear about all the trouble you've had. We should have caught that problem before it left the factory.

No the engine was pulled out of the truck. I could see it in the shop. I think it was the top compression ring. I asked several times to see it but the dealer wouldnt let me back there They say insurance but ia am suspicious. They said they honed the cylender wall. They also had to destroy the oil pan to get it off and used a disk machine to clean the block. I talked to ford before they did this and told them I wanted a new engine but the dealer sain they were just installling a missing part. I dont know what caused all the problems but they all started after surgury. It left behind broken clips , mangled aluminum on the turbo pipe, green antifreeze and an oil level 1.5 inches over the the top of the full line. The tech couldnt even get the oil level right. The day I got it back is the first day it took off by itself. then the indicater lites started going off and on. Glow plug lites wouldnt go out, water in fuel light comes on for no reason and goes out on restart, gas guage sometimes never goes up , sometimes drops to half stays for a while then goes back up., trans temp guage goes to full temp whil waiting for glow plugs lite to go out before engine has started for the day. Its all very anoying but the surging is a safty problem and the engine hadall the abrasives in the oil. I got to contact someone higher in Ford to see if they will get me out of this truck. I wish I never got rid of my 97 with 102000 miles on it It was more pleasurable to drive. The 02 looks great though.
I know why the dealer hid the problem from me, I guess there is no thing like pre delivery inspection but how did it get buy everone at the factory. It was so obvious when cold." we got it all warmed up for ya"
Anyway it is a long and tangled mess.Maybe Ford can use it in a crash test or something

You need to get a hold of the Ford District office and tell them your problems. You have poor dealer service. Make it clear, that unless the truck is fixed you wish to return it under the lemon law.

GeeBee is correct. You've not only got a lemmon but it is a safety issue. If I were you I wouldn't drive it. You probably paid $35,000 for a vehicle that is useless.
Also, it is my understanding that this issue of the omitted compression ring happened shortly after you took delivery of this vehicle. I'd be wanting to know why they needed to run a hone down that (or any other) cylinder on a brand new engine. All he needed to do is replace the omitted compression ring and put it back together. If he did indeed use a hone on this engine, then it was either an unnecessary proceedure or it had a mark in the cylinder (that he was trying to hone out). If he thought it necessary to hone the cylinders on a brand new engine, it is a simple case of stupidity. If he was trying to remove a scratch, score or ANY defect in the cylinder, the engine should have been replaced. Your district service rep is probably the one who refused to authorize the replacement engine, so you need to go over his head and file your greivance with customer relations. The address of that person will be in your owners manual. Good luck.

Service said it was to remove carbon.????
I talked to customer relations in the owners manual , the called service and I was told that that the service manager said that they were just installing a missing part and that Ford had to go with there service manager. I was told that they do it all the time to which I wonder how much does this happen?????????
I believe that the real story is that they wanted to keep the truck on the road a cheaply as possible and that I wouldnt know any better or would just not complain. Unfortunatly the truck hasnt allowed me not to think about it. Every time they work on it and I am told that they fixed it it eather does something new or after a few days an old problem pops up.
The most regular problem at this time is the gas guage and its most likely action is after adding 20 gals of fuel the guage stays at half for hours. Since the dealer will never fuel the beast he will never see it do this. It also drops , stays for a couple of hours and then returns, I left it with them once for a week but they said they coulcnt find a problem but the worksheet says they drove it 17 miles.
The next most frequent thing it does is the water in fuel lite comes on. Even though I was told by Ford and a writer who has now left the dealership I can bring it in at any time it acts up when I get it there acting up I am told they cant look at it now and to make an appointment. Since they couldnt do it then I had them shut it off and back on and the lite was gone. The water must have evaperated.
The surging has happened 3 times since they did surgery Its not a lot but it could be disasterous. Its been in for that to and you would think that would concern them. But I guess not
I have to do something cause it realy agrivates me. Id love not to drive it I have other vehicles but it is winter again. Other vehicles dont like winter. Not to mention that they put me in an Escort as a loner. yeach...... Diferent view from down there. At first they didnt even want to give me a loner at all. Plus we have animals and I need to get hay, grain ,etc so I need it.
anyway you are right I must go up the corporate ladder,
I trealy get sme when I see Bill Ford saying how much he likes hearing how folks love his trucks. I love all my past Ford trucks but this one is under my skin.
Does any one have an adress that I can send him a letter. I dont know if it will do any good but worth a try. It might be good to try everything
Thanks Bob

Sounds like you have a loose electrical connection causing the high number of fault codes and instrument cluster problems. Whenever we see really high number of faults they are almost always related to a bad connection (loose or pinched). How do you know your internal oil system is contaminated with debris from the repair? When debris gets into hi-press oil system from repair the edge filter in the hi-press pump can become restricted. The edge filter is internal to the pump. Since the restriction is prior to the IPR the PCM cannot control the actual ICP pressure. If the engine continues to run with the IPR unhooked the edge filter is restricted. The recommended repair for this is to drain out two gallons of oil and add 2 gallons of diesel fuel. Idle engine till hot then change the oil and filter. The hi-pressure pump should then be changed after the flush. It sounds like this a symptom of the quantity before quality repair method. I would find a new dealer to take it to, if possible.

It was the engine oil that was contaminated I didnt like what they did so I had it analized and it came back as abnormal with abrasives.that was oil from the pan after 2400 miles of filtering Wonder what was in it before it was filtered for all those miles.
As for bad connection I wouldnt doubt it and I have had service check it but they found no problem. I have found a broken clip but it just holds wirers no an electricle connection. Its just typical I have asked and of course I was told that they replace any clips they break Just missed the easiest one on top that is easy to see I guess.
I think it is just a realy bad dealer on the repairs.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Nov-02 AT 07:53 PM (EST)]I had a Dodge that the transmission kept going out rebuilt it 4 times finally the 5th time I said no more I want a new tranny. dealer said they couldn,t do it. I called Chrysler they said noway I said well I won,t accept it being rebuilt. My dad has a friend that was pretty high up in chrysler he said call a news station that does reports on this kind of thing Chrysler doesn,t want the bad publicity,so my wife calles one and I will be damned if the dealer didn,t call me two days later and told me they did alot of talking but got me a new transmission. I told them they didn,t do crap. So maybe somthing like this could work for you. We don,t have a local news station that does it but we called down in Detroit To Ruth to the rescue my wife talked to her personaly said she would check into it. Worked like a charm.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I've got a '02 F350 PSD that does something similar, I feel it needs a new throttle pedal. How do you convince the morons at the dealership they need to replace something that fails occasionally?
Sometimes I have as much as 1" of dead pedal... on 3 occasions I've had about -1", meaning I put the weight of my foot on the pedal and she tries to break everyone's neck inside. It's getting worse, yesterday I pulled out and kept pushing... pushing... I reached the floor board and was turning about 1400 RPM and holding, no acceleration... then it was as if she suddenly said "Oh, you want throttle!!! BAM"

If its getting worse they will probibly EVENTUALY find it. These electronic throtels are a pain in the *** I think they have the potential to be deadly. Who knows what it needs Everything seems to be interconnected I think the problem is if they try to fix it and get it rong Ford wont reimburse the dealer for susequent repaires.
I think I have had that too but im not quite sure yet. Yesterday my check engine lite came on yellow but then went awayI always seeems to beat an inconvenient time and the idle started to go up from 750 to 1050.
Have you had a lot of problems with the truck?????
