i just purchased a 1978 bronco today 4x4. the question is its the first one ive ever seen with a soft top on the back. was this rare. i only payed 100.00 its clean, some neighbor hood kids cut the ignition switch off it so the guy had no idea how to fix it. hence the reason i only payed $100.00 for it. i only want it to play in the mud. goign to weld the spiders together and have some fun. its got a 351m in it. also came with a brand new rebuilt transfer case. jsut wondering.
thanks
The soft top is after market. I don't think ford ever sold a bronco with a stock soft top. Hundred bucks sounds pretty good for what you got though. Good luck.
im only goign to trailer this thign and then 4wheel with it. as long as i dont drive it on the pavement it shouldnt break. i weld the derby cars rears all the time, never have a prob with them .might even throw a 4 in suspension lift on it.
Don't weld the front, you won't like it. Go ahead and weld the rear if you're not going to drive it on the street, otherwise, go buy some lockers. A good discussion of what lockers are available and what their advantages and disadvantages are is in that link above.
im not driving it on the street. hence the reason i said it will eb trailerd every were and then pulled of fin the mud. no street will this thing ever see.
it will amke a good little 4x4 mud bogger. some 38's cam up the 400. take the top off the back. strip off it what i dont need. get a set of dec stacks mad for it.a 6 inch lift will do to.
even if you did drive it on the street, id still weld the rear, its not bad atal, i have driven welded broncos and they do better than auto lockers do as far as predictability. goodluck
I've blown the carrier in mine twice, it just won't hold up with the 35's. Driving it on the street wouldn't matter as long as it's not full time 4WD. All you have to do is unlock the hubs and you would never know that the front was locked... But mine is an 85 with the ttb front, I'm not too impressed with how it's held up. Carrier has exploded a couple of times sending my spiders through the diff cover, and I've stripped the splines on the axles out at the hubs once. Is the 78 straight axle in the front? I really want to convert mine to a straight axle front, I hear that the dana's they put up there were a lot heavier duty than the TTB setup I have.
I really didn't like the front welded anyway, it took away one of the best characteristics of the big bronco... it's sharp turning radius. Heck of a buy though, I wish I could find a deal like that just for a doner vehicle. Have fun!!!
