Rear End Clunk
I have been experiencing a clunk or "snap" in my rear diff on my 2002 escape when changing directions. Particularely in snow or mud and only when selected to 4wd not in auto. The dealer has not really found anything except attempting to tighten the axle mounts . Any one seen this problem?

Like all 4WD vehicles, they will clunk when switching from FW to Rev. If you read through the manual closely you will actually find where they tell you that there will be a clunk when you are in 4WD if you go from REV to FW or vice- versa...
First time I heard it, I was quite concerned, but reading the manual (who would have thought of that) gave me the answer I needed.
