Okay everyone, I'm looking for a diesel extended cab truck to buy. I'm looking at towing about 9000lbs or so two times per month. Other times in the month, I'll have about 1200lbs in the bed. All this will be on the highway. Other than that, it will be ran a few times around town. Nothing too extreme.
I've thought about a Dodge, but the auto trans in those makes me skeptical. I really like the look of the Ford 250 and 350. I've been looking at the 2000 and 2001s. How does the drivetrain hold up in the Ford Diesels? I would like to add a few mods, such as a chip and exhaust just to give it a little something extra. I want a nice, reliable truck that rides good and I think that Ford can give this. Any advice on the durability of the drivetrain? Any advice on which modifications would be best? Any points to make about buying a Ford 250 or 350 ext cab auto diesel?
Well your asking this question on a Ford board so Ford it is. I have an F250 for my needs but you may consider an F350 for your weights. I've had nothing but good luck with ALL the Fords I've owned including this one. I've said enough.
I am the owner of a 1997 f-350 dullay, and I have to amit I do love the truck. I have hauled as much as 28,890 lb on it across I-24 in TN from Nashville to Chattanooga. The weight is not a factor in the mater at all. If you feel you need to haul something, then just hook to it and go! Just a reminder though (make sure everthing is in tact and all tires are good. The truck that I own now has Aprox 385,000 miles on it and still pulls strong, all you have to do is just keep up the maintance on the unit and keep your tires turning. As for upgrades I have only upgraded the filter and the brake system, as for anything else I have not done much.
Get a 99.5 or newer because they have the upgraded injectors in them. Engine serial number 0896812 is the first engine that has the new injectors. There should be a label toward the front of the drivers side valve cover with the engine serial number on it.
