My my 99 f-250psd just did this this morning on my way to work, i pulled over and let it sit for a little bit and then restarted it
the light didn't come back on, so does this mean that all is well now? From what everyone has posted, if the light came back on when i restarted it, I should be worried, but since it stayed off, does this mean things are okay?
I am still going to autozone after work and see if they can read it.
anyway, I am new to the board and looking forward to posting here :-)
I have a 2003 F350psd 4x4 crew cab and I pull a 10,000 pound 5th wheel RV. Just after my 1000 mile break-in, while pulling the RV in hilly terrain, my overdrive light started flashing. I pulled over and after cooling down the turbo, I shut the engine down and turned the ignition off. After re-start, the light was gone and I have not seen it flash again. I have pulled the RV many times since then and have had no trouble or flashing light. But, I have also not been on that hilly route again.
My thoughts:
When it happened, I was pulling in overdrive (which is usually fine for flat terrain) and the computer was automatically taking me out of overdrive several times to negotiate the hills. It seems that my computer finally took over because of this and decided that, due to the strain of trying to get up those hills with 10,000 lbs., it was gonna force me to stay out of overdrive so there would be more power and it would also run cooler(transmission). Although my guage did not indicate that I was hot. This is all I can come up with that half-way makes any sense to me. Any critique?
Funny you mention this about pulling a trailer. I have a small compared to yours, trailer that I pull around a few pieces of lawn equipment with and since it has been cold here in PA I have not needed any lawn equipment and the light has not been on. I wonder? time will tell.
Bigdog02,
Let us know if your autozone does anything for you, mine would not. Let us know what they find, if anything
well i went to the autozone here in huntingdon, thinking they wouldn't be able to do anything and got a guy that had actually owned a 98 f-250 diesel, and knew what i was talking about.
He wasn't sure if the code reader would be able to read my truck, for some reason he explained the transmission in the 99 is somehow different, from earlier and later models, but he would try it anyway. He hooked it up and no codes even came up, sop he cleared it anyway, but no codes showed up at all.
His suggestion once i told him the history of the truck (30,000 miles on it now, bought it with 22,000 miles on it, the guy that had it before me only used it for towing a 5th wheel camper)anyway once he heard the history he suggested that I check the tranny fluid and most likely change it, since it did pull a good bit of weight for the first part of it life, and maybe the guy that had it had no idea how to drive with a trailer on and beat the tranny pretty hard without knowing what he was doing.
He said if the tranny fluid was clean, then his best guess.........computer went stupid for a little bit, like some of the people said in earlier posts.
When the light is flashing, the computer has detected a "fault" in the trans., causing it it go into a Manual emergency mode. Just disconnect the Batteries for 60 seconds and the computer will reset itself and the trans. will work properly. If the light continues to blink, you have a trans. problem.
Been there & done that.

My 1990 f250 od off light started flashing and hasn't quit. I tried disconnecting hart cable but it still is flashing. It wasn't on when I shut it off the other day just came on the next morning. I can not find a test connection under the hood. it suppose to be drivers side. ?????

Being a 1990, I would try in a different forum. Maybe either the motor based, or the year based. You probably have an issue, but I don't know much about the diagnostic capabilities of the earlier rigs, I do know you would need a good scantool if you were looking for the diagnostic port under the hood, those ports with my snapon required various adapters and "keys" compared to the newer OBDII or CAN stuff.
