pyrometer HELP?
hey i just put in a pyrometer on my 99 f-250 PSD. i put the sensor about a foot away from the turbo. i went to drive it and it only got up to 300 degrees F. what happened did i put it in the wrong place? why dident it get very hot? sould i have put it on the other side where the manifold and the y pipe connect and then the exhaust runs threw the intercooler and then into the turbo? HELP?

In my opinion you should have put it pre-turbo in the up pipe after the exhaust manifold or in the exhaust maniflod itself. I have a clamp-on unit in the up pipe(you can see it in my pics). You want it pre-turbo to monitor the engine exhaust temps so things don't start melting. Max EGT is 1250*F pre-turbo and the safe shutdown temp is 300*F or less.

i put it before the turbo. its kinda next to where the air filter hose goes to the turbo. should i put it near the y pipe from the exhaust manifold? ill send you a pic of where i have it now tomarrow its kinda hard to explain where mine is at. where is yours at it looks to me like it was on the downpipe?

From what i am reading, you put the probe into the intercooler line.
You want the probe in the exhaust pipe about 6 inches from where it connects to the manifold on the drivers side.
Where it is now mounted, you are measuring the temp of the air being compressed by the turbocharger. You will have to have the hole plugged when you remove the probe to maintain a pressurized turbo system.

If you look at powerstroker250's link pic of the thermocouple #2. You can see the oil filter in the edge of the photo. He has the thermocouple mounted after the manifold on the up pipe before the turbo on the drivers side of the motor. The downpipe is located on the passenger side exiting the turbo and going down connecting to the rest of the exhaust system under the truck. So to answer your question, no it is not on the downpipe it is pre turbo as he stated in his reply. possibly the angle of the photo is throwing you off

pyrometer HELP?
If you put it post-turbo add 200 degrees the the guage reading. I went post after hearing about these probes melting. If you have it pre-turbo and it melts...bye bye turbo... There were several several people on this board who had seen it happen and I talked with the guys and the diesel shop I go to and they have seen it happen. Wasn't worth the risk for me so I went post and simply add 200 degrees, so I safe shut down is 100 and upper limit is 1000 per my gauges.
