Really Loud Knockin!

I got a 94 f-150 inline 6 4.9. I changed the motor out last weekend. Ever since then the motors been awesome. Cept I have noticed a little low end knock when I first start it up. It was a salvage yard motor, but only had 110000 on it. I decided to change the oil the other day because I wanted to get any other particles out of the motor. I changed the oil using 10-30 and used Lucas Oil products. Its supposed to be like stp stuff but better. Well I cranked the truck over with the plug to the distributer off to prime the engine with oil. When I kicked it over normal, it was knocking pretty good and it sounded like a lifter was sticking. After about ten restarts and 30 miles, it knocks really loud when its "cold". After warm up it sounds like a dream. Any suggestions?

I'd hook up a pressure guage where the oil sending unit is and see what kind of oil pressure you have when start and cold. Is this a deep knock or a light tick or both?

The pressure is good. Its high when its cold, and lower when warm while driving. Its a new pump. Its a deep knock when the idle kicks down, and a lil bit of a tick when i first changed the oil, but after its just the knock

Did you actually put a guage on it. The dash guage is just idiot light with a needle. If it is good, then I'm going to shoot from the hip, not to say that this is your problem. You could have an excessively worn rod bearing or spun, piston pin slap or a broken piston skirt. If you still have the old oil filter, open it up and check for metal contamination.

Loosemaster is correct, you need to check your oil pressure immediately. You're not getting thorough oiling at start up.

Bearings, piston slap, broken skirt, worn bore, all can cause this noise. Fixing the problem only does that, you need to determine *why* it happened. An oil passage might be clogged, the pressure too low, a bearing installed incorrectly to begin with so the oiling holes don't line up, etc etc etc.

It's possible that you have a fuel pump problem if mechanical. If not then the pan will need to come off. I have a high mileage engine with a slight knock. Planning on pulling the pan next year and replacing all the rod bearings.

I suggest to pour a quart of Gunk Motor Oil Flush to your existing oil (don't drain any at this point). Start the engine and let it run for 5 minutes and turn OFF the engine.

Drain the oil and remove the old oil filter. Let the old oil drain for 30 minutes or more.

Put 10W30 oil in the new oil filter itself (close to a 1/3 quart of oil fills the oil filter) and screw in the oil filter. Pour a oil to the recommended level.

Start the engine and see if the knocking goes away. Let the engine cool down or try to start it the following day to see if the knocking comes back again.

This engine has a 110,000 miles on it and from a salvage yard. With out knowing how the inside looks, he could cause more damage by loosening the particles in the engine.

The motor looked really clean on the inside. No slug or residue or anything. I had the valve cover and pan off the oil. Looked really awesome. It seems the knock has progressed. I say im just gonna run the hell out of it. Ive tried everything and nothing seems to be going my way. Ive treated her with respect and i get nothin in return but more crap!!!! =(
