For the last week or so everytime I start my truck it makes this metallic screech for a second, kind of like when you try to start a vehicle that is already started. Then when I came out of work last night, it made that noise and then did not try to start. I could turn the key and hear the solenoid click, but nothing would happen. I crawled under the truck and banged on the starter a few times, and then it started. Does that sound like I definitely just need a new starter? Would the fact that I installed headers a couple weeks ago be adding to this problem because of extra heat or anything? Will one of the AZ specials be a decent enough replacement? Thanks!
Sounds like the starter is shot, what kind of headers did you install, ceramic coated one are best cause they let the least amount of heat get too the starter, and that heat can kill a starter.
Your starter is for sure shot. You can keep tapping it with a hammer until you get a new one (my dad did that for 3 months on his old 79 F350 until he got a new one). Just make sure you get a good starter. The cheap ones will work but usually not for long. Good luck!
I had been tapping it every few weeks or so with a hammer for the last year so I figure it finally just got tired of it. I replaced it with the Duralast from AZ with the lifetime warranty and it is doing great now. Starts way faster than it did before with no noise.
