C-6 Tranny Problem

I have a 1978 F-350 dually with a 460 / c-6 automatic. The problem I am having is that going into forward gears ( 1st, 2nd or drive ) takes a long time for the tranny to engage. Going into reverse it engages immediately. There are no sounds coming from the tranny while its engaging. Going into a forward gear doesnt take nearly as long once the truck is warmed up and has been run.

I checked the tranny fluid and its full and also isnt discolored or smell burnt. I am hoping someone on here has a clue as to whats going on because I sure as heck dont.

Thanks for any help or ideas you can provide.

Chris

Unhappy

Sounds to me like your forward clutch pack is going out.

also you might want to make sure you have the proper weight ATF in your tranny befor you start tearing things apart.

If this problem is mostly while the transmission is cold the most likely problem is hard seals in the forward clutch. The solution is an overhaul. Even if you have high mileage it may not require any hard parts. The seals and perhaps some friction plates may be all you need. I did my E350 C6 at 195,000 miles and only used the rubber seals throughout and 4 friction plates in the forward clutch.
