Hi, I'm new to this (forum)
I just bought my first 64 econo van 170 str6, it is a project alright
and I'm not too familiar with it
first is it possible and does it make sense to convert it from gen to altenator
or should I just replace the generator ( and where?)
the same points to electronic ignition ?
second I like to repaint it so where could I find new window stripping etc..?
just to many questions for right now I know I'm sorry
If anybody could help me on that
or even know somebody here in the SF Bay erea who deals with sixties econos
yes change over from gen to alt, kinda like having kerrosene lamps and getting electricity. there are always factory manuals on ebay for econos, they are pretty much the same from 61/64.
post a few pics in your gallery, and look at mine and the others. also try oldeconolines at yahoo groups, best source of info you will find on the net.
you will need a bracket from a 170/200/250 six out of a maveric, falcon, granada, etc. etc. etc. it will need to be a 65 up to have an alternator.you will also need a a wiring setup from a donor, easiest way to go. the alternator harness comes out seperatly on most fords.
I believe I have a generator in my 61 pickup. If it's working correctly, is it still generally recommended to convert over to an alternator? What will I gain?
The reason I ask, is I plan to pull the engine out for rebuilding this summer. If changing over is a recommended move, I could do before reinstalling the motor.
Thanks again for all the previous advice you shared with me.
as mil1lion said, you would hae a much better electrical system. besides that, go price a rebuilt generator and then price an alternator. the price of a generator is enough to replace several alternators. trying to find a generator at a parts store is almost impossible. the counter people usually dont even know what one is!
