Just picked up and getting used to my 1997 250, CC, 2wd. Run's great, but every now and then she just dies. Only happens when warm, and at idle. First thought is CPS, as I've read so much about them here, but hate to shell out the bucks for a new one, when I'm not sure. Diesel's are a new thing for me so I'm not sure where to start, except for what I've read in the is forum. (BTW....great info here, better than a shop manual.) Any thoughts on where I should look? Haven't changed the fuel filter or drained the water yet, but no idiot lights to indicated that there is problem. The problem seems to be electrical, simply because of it's sudeness, and such. Tranny seems good, no lock up problems.
Also, a tire question. The 235/85/16's seem puny. Anyone have any suggestions about something around a 265? In an AT?
Last question. Everyone says to avoid the Ford dealers as they rape you on parts prices, and go to International. Should I look for a "big truck" parts house in my area, or would the tractor dealer (Case, ect.) have parts in stock?
Does the tach work when it dies? Normally the tach won't work if the CMP Sensor is bad. It usually doesn't throw a code either. I recommend going to International for the part. You can usually get one for less than $100. If you decide to change the CMP here's a couple of helpful links:
Tach works fine, while cranking or other wise. I swear it's like some one turned the key off. I "jiggeld" the ingnition switch even, not result. Thanks for the links john, will certianly check them out.
If tach is fine it's not the CMP Sensor. How many miles on the truck? Change the fuel filter and clean the fuel regulator screen before anything else. The fuel regulator screen can be reached with a Q-tip from inside the fuel bowl. The opening is at the top right of the fuel bowl once the cap is removed. Other than that I'd check the fuel pressure next. After that, high pressure oil pump.
