Hi everybody,
I'm new at this, here goes.
I purchased a used 1997 Expy a year ago and just in the past few weeks
I have had problems with the shifter, when i push in the brake it will not change into gear or i have to push the brake pedal in all the way to the firewall to get it to shift out of park can anyone help?
The Brake On/Off switch is going bad, or is loose on it's (under the steering column) mount. This switch performs several functions, including releasing the electric lock that keeps the shifter locked in Park until the brake pedal is depressed.
Bet your brake lights won't work during these episodes.
If the problem deteriorates to the point that you can't shift out of Park at all:
1. Turn the engine off.
2. Turn the key forward just enough to release the shift lever, but not so far as to activate the instrument cluster warning lights.
3. Shift into Neutral.
4. Start the engine, shift into gear and drive away.
Probably not. And with a problem as severe as yours I'd try to sell off the vehicle before it can no longer be moved. Its a little old but I'd be willing to give you a couple of hundred sollars for it.
No silly, of course you can get it fixed (I'd replace the switch actually). If you follow the lever leading up from the break pedal you will find the switch. Its not too hard to replace but if you feel uncomfortable doing it, simply take it to a local independent shop for repair. You can always take it to the dealer but that might cost a bit more.
