Hey all, I have a 1971 Ford F100 Ranger XLT with the stock 390 in it. AS of the past 3 or 4 days, everytime I put my truck in drive, the whole truck will start violently shaking and when I let my foot off the break, will BARELY crepp forward. I am used to it jetting out at about 15 MPH when it justs coasts... When I put it in park, it just barely shakes, if at all. There is also a vibration when I accelerate, but I think that is a different problem all together... Well, I took it to the shop to have the U joints checked, but they said they are good and they guy drove it and said that he thinks it may be the carburator. Does anyone else think that is the case? I bought some spray carb cleaner and plan on trying it out before I take it to have it worked on. But does anyone think that the carb is really the problem, or any other ideas? thanks for your replies!
I thought about the tune up, but the previous owner just did one not too long ago, and this problem just started out of nowhere. I will look into the plug thing though. Any other suggestions?
Alright, after inspecting my truck thoroughly and driving it a little more, I noticed that it only happens after it has warmed up for 3 or 4 miinutes and it is when I am stopped. There is also a very apparent gas smell, and it is very strong. So, I am thinking that the automatic choke is stuck open causing the carburator to flood and its running too rich. Will anyone second that, or do you have other ideas? And if you think that is the problem or whatever you think the problem is, will you please post how I would go about fixing it? Thanks for everyone that is stickin with me during this, I know im not easy to work with since Im not all that car saavy.
UPDATE: Turns out the the carburetor that was in was a rebuilt one and the throat had done bad. I am getting a new one put on, its being ordered from Ford right now, so I should get it back by tomorrow. Thanks for all the replies!
