Now if the symptoms are like I quoted above then I would check the mass air flow sensor again. If not then check the intake air tube. If it is cracked, cut or broke badly it will allow to much air to come into the intake causing the problem quoted above.

I just had those problems with a mazda and it surprised me when I finally figured it out.

I would think either IAC valve, or FPR, fuel pressure regulator, probably the FPR. These can go bad, and will act like a bad o2 sensor, and over time will cause the o2 to go bad, this is a fairly inexpensive part that can be purchased from the local auto parts place.

What does the speedometer do when the vehicle is jumping? Does it waver more than you feel it should? Do any lights come on then?

One thing I have not noticed mentioned here. You should find a shop you are comfortable with, that seems to know what they are doing, and then stick with that shop until they find the problem and fix it. I know, another problem is as you mentioned - a shop that you feel was ripping you off. I think this is why someone previously mentioned finding a better dealer service center. If you do go from shop to shop - every shop has to start from scratch, without a record of what has been done. Also, any shop that guarrantees their repairs by redoing them free of charge is a good bet. It happens sometimes that the brand new part that is replacing the bad one is bad too, so a shop that will check this is reasonably trustworthy. I spent a lot of years finding a shop that is professional, good at what they do, and honest. I stick with that shop even though my vehicle is under warrantee. Only the warrantee work goes to the dealer BUT I have full documentation on any work done, and it is done by a Class A mechanic so as to maintain the warrantee.

I guess those codes do work, don't they. A P1407 just about pinponts a no vacuum condition at the EGR, doesn't it. For a bit of a sceptic like me, it is good to see something point to the problem. I guess if I worked with autos and the codes all day, like a mechanic would, I would start to have more faith in the diagnostics computers. It just seems that every time 'I' have a problem - I don't get a code.
