I was just wondering if there were any golfers around? i play a little and am looking to get better. the best improvment i've made is changing my grip. when i first learned to play i woud point my thumbs straight down the grip. then i found out that pointing the "v" of hands (the v between the thumb and first finger) down the club would bring the face around more effectivly. anyone care to share any tips?
I love the game and play it............................

.....I really suck at it also
I celebrate everytime I break 100..LOL!! I 'm sucks at golf but still love the game..If you want to improve your game get regular lessons like once every month and try to hit a bucket of range ***** three to four times a week..
Being totally uncoordinated, I don't play any sports, but I love to watch golf. Here in Rochester, it's "golf heaven." Supposedly more courses per capita than anywhere else in the USA, though I find that hard to believe. One course, Oak Hill- very historic. Last year it hosted the PGA Championship, in '95 the Ryder Cup, in '84 the Senior Open. You can't imagine how exciting it is to have THAT caliber of golf in a little town like this.
best thing when practicing at the range is to hit like a 7 iron, and get good at it, save the "big dog" for later. Then on your way home from the course, rent/buy the movie "tin cup". Its a good golf comedy, also caddy shack, and bad golf my way
I call it chasing a little white ball through the forest, in the beach, with a little fishing just for fun.
I'm probably the only golfer who owns his own clubs and consistently shoots over 120. Ha ha. Once, I broke 100 on a pitch and putt.
Anyway, my father in law (who is a MUCH better golfer than I) advised me that when I go to a range, I should make my shots as if I were actually playing the game. Driver, 7 iron. Driver, 6 iron. Driver, 9 iron. Driver, wedge. etc. And get on the practice green too.
If I had more room in behind my house, I'd probably practice chipping. I'm okay at chipping, it's the driving and putting that screws up my game.
Usually I hook pretty bad. The other day, I sliced it real bad, and I almost took out my wife and my buddy's wife hiding behind the golf cart. But 2 drives later, I smoked that sucker straight about 230 yards. I've never been able to duplicate that. In fact, I had to yell "FORE" on the next drive, and almost took out the golf cart again.
Laugh if you want, I'm being serious. I truly suck at golf. So bad, it's funny.
I was taught and it is my opinion that your left hand (if you are a right handed player) thumb should be straight down the grip. Your right hand thumb-forefinger should create the v you describe. In that fashion you can draw/fade the ball simply by adjusting your left hand grip (rotate clockwise to strengthen -draw- or counter clockwise to weaken -fade-). Also, the last three fingers of your left hand is all that should be really holing on to the club; the rest (and the right hand) are just along for the ride.
Again, in my opinion, the two best things to work on is your mental state (confidence) and your short game; especially your putting, if you are looking to lower your score.
I do not know abut New York, but there a ton of corses in the Phoenix area and I like to play, but with a family there is not always the $$$$ unless I play at 12:00 during the summer. I do like to play in 113 degree weather
I love the game but I have been told I don't take it seriously enough. I fail to see the point in taking a game seriously. These same people told me to take a year off & then quit. I just quit playing with them.
My other golf buddies have taught me a few things that I have found helpful in being consistently in the 100-110 range:
a 6" putt counts the same stroke as a 250 yd. drive
if you hit behind a tree or some other bad place, take a stroke or chip out to a good place to hit from. It wasn't a good shot that got you there in the first place, you're not likely to suddenly hit a miracle shot to get you out.
keep your sense of humor, be able to laugh it off when you screw up
trees are 90% air but if you try to hit through one you're guaranteed to hit the 10% that isn't
if you find yourself slicing or hooking, don't try to correct it by aiming the other way, you may accidently hit it straight about that time.
I bought my first set of clubs a few days ago. I've never played before, but I want to learn and I figured, what the heck, they're only $40 on clearance. If I like it I'll get a better set but that will do for now.
I love golf and have been playing for years. I agree to improve you really need to work on the 100 yard in shot and anything around the green. But for me the main key to the swing is tempo. If I slow my swing down and try not to rip the cover off the ball i find it goes just as far and I have a bit of control over it. Also I don't move my head as much.
