2002 F-250 Super Duty PSD, 4WD XLT.. I bought a strap wrench with a plastic strap.. I can't avoid a little oil getting on the new filter while changing it, and the plastic strap slips when trying to tighten it.. The guy who said "hand tight" must be a hell of a lot stronger than I am!! I'm using a Motor Craft filter with a flat gasket..
Jab the screw driver up through the bottom first and drain the oil into bucket. I do this anyway, I hate hot oil running down my armpit but only on removal, not installation
The Ford Mod. 1995 filter that is used on the PSD measures 4-1/4" in Dia.
I just bought a Rite-Grip clamping strap wrench at a local auto store that will handle 4" to 4-3/8" dia. filters and it works great.Made in USA and only $7.50.
I have a set of filter pliers and they work but are awkward to get in a good position under the truck. They are spread all the way out when going over the filter and are hard to squeeze tight enough when opened all the way.

That works good (sometimes) for taking the filter off.. I have a friend that tried that, and wound up with the can and filter element off but left the filter flange still wound tight against the block!! BUMMER!!
I agree with Eric. If the gasket has a thin film of oil on it when it's installed, about 2/3 turn after gasket contact will keep it from leaking (which is the idea). Then, it will come loose by hand at the next oil change.
I do like the idea of puncturing the bottom to drain hot oil, and will try this next time.
Take a strip of emory cloth, slip it between the filter and the wrench and this will keep it from slipping. Also, try to grab it as close to the top as possible so the filter will not start to cave in as you clamp down on it.
Punching a hole in the bottom of the filter works wonders. You can buy a metal filter wrench that will will fit the FL-1995 filter. I've been using one for years with no problem with at least 30 oil changes behind me.
