whistling noise

whistling noise
I have a 87 f-250 with the straight six. There is a whistling noise at idle but when I accelerate the noise stops. I belive that it is a vaccum problem. I just don't really know where to check. Any hints?

Only time I've experienced this was when I ran a vehicle without the intake hoses on and the "whistling" was the intake air sucking into the throttle body. Noise goes away after you crack open the butterfly more. Check your intake system.

Get under the hood and isolate the problem. I'm assuming you do have an air filter installed. Pull off the intake hoses going to the throttle body(if it sounds like it's the locale) and it'll scream at you if it's the problem. Run the throttle with your hands and get dirty. Be one with the truck.

I had a whistling on an older car, not a Ford though, it emmitted from the alternator, apparently the bearings were going, and about 60mi later, it seized and the belt burned and snapped. No damage, and we drove it home, so not to worry too much if that is it, but something to think about.
