I am also looking for reasonable gas mileage. An auto that only has 1 and D is not going to get it. I also found out that the T5 may not be the way to go for a stick to wind up where it should. Ed

I agree!!! Gasoline is becoming a major investment anymore!!! see what many do not realize is 50% of the time, you are getting gasahole at these pumps anyway, which burns even faster)..As tall a rear end gear one can find doesn't hurt. The FMX with the cast iron case i rememberdealing with, was a guy that had an old beat up workk truck with the unmodified cleveland V8,351 he did rather good on fuel luckily..I never checked the times the driveshaft turned per the rear wheel on tis e though, so i don't kow what ratio he back there, but he got decent fuel mileage.i seem to have the best mileage with Shell fuel for some reason. But with the 55 Fairlane, that 3 on the tree manual is a fun car to drive, but in my 63 ford unibody. i', wamted to go with automic on that one, sees by camparing,we seenm t get better mileage here for some some reason, it may be because we hae the humid thicker air down here,Seems like i keep getting white fast burning gasahol at these racetrack fuel stations,.Janet

Welcome to FTE.

You can start your own thread for questions like this, no problem.

Your '56 F100 would have had a Borg Warner T98 for a four speed as OEM.

No external linkage, as you can see:

Your four speed, does it look like one of these?

Remanufactured Toploaders

or:

Neither the toploader Ford or BW T10 were ever offered in a stock pickup. The closest would have been the toploader derived 4 speed OD trans from the mid '70s to mid '80s. So, if you have a '60s car four speed, whoever installed it may well have made their own linkage.

You may be able to buy a Hurst shifter that would work, but we need to ID your trans first.
