I'm looking for some wisdom, folks. My 7.3L 95 F-250 runs cool (barely up to the first mark), but that's not a problem. The heater works fine. What I'm bothered about is that the upper radiator hose and the antifreeze mixture in the reservoir stay cold to the touch most of the time. If I take it out on the highway for a while, the hose gets slightly warmer (cool instead of cold). I see no circulation in the resevoir. My thought was that either the thermostat may be stuck closed (but wouldn't that make the temperature gauge run hot?), or I've got a huge air bubble somewhere.
I had the same thing happen to me on my 93 7.3L F250.
The problem is that your thermostat is stuck open,
not allowing the engine to warm up.
Go ahead and replace the thermostat, and that should
fix it right up. Keep me posted, I would like to hear
if this fixes it or not.
I put 90,000 mi. on my '95 PSD before I had to replace to water pump. Big deal. However, it never ran hot enough to raise the temp guage above the "N" on normal unless I was pulling a good load(12,000 - 16,000 lbs.) over 4th of July, or, Lookout Pass. (That's in North Idaho)
It made sense to me to replace the thermostat while I had it apart. The original did not have any inidcation of the temp. stamed on it, but the NAPA replacement was a 195 degree. It now runs straight up in the middle of "Normal" while empty, and does not climb above that when pulling hard.
Just so you know, the steel bolts for the thermostat housing are threaded into the aluminum water pump, and two of mine twisted off the old pump trying to get it apart.
Good Luck-
