Have an 84 6.9. Just got the truck last fall. Have had all kinds of starting problems this winter. First diesel I've owned so has been a long winter. This past week, I replaced an injector, put all new glow plugs in, and a new glow plug relay controller. It fired right up. Let it run for a few minutes and after about 5 minutes it started making a clacking sound. So I shut it down. Quit working on it for today, but would like ideas of what this noise all of a sudden could be? I don't seem to be able to learn fast enough?! Help! Thanks for any in-put!
Hey Jeepo. Try the pre-powerstroke diesel forum. There are some guys on there that work on them all of the time. You will probably get more informed responses from those guys. I run some 6.9 diesels but without hearing it, it`s hard to know what your clack sounds like. Do you have oil pressure? Did anything fall down the holes while you had them open? Good luck.
Thanks for the reply. I used a lot of wd40 to remove the crusted up fuel injector port so i'm thinking that might have been the sound or else the new injector was stickin for the first few minutes of start-up. There is no knock now that it has run for a while! I was super careful not to let anything other than crust fall in the pre chamber. it was soaked in wd though.
WD 40 will have the engine clacking as you have just discovered. So will starting fluid if you ever chance to use it! Highly combustibles are really not encouraged in the diesel but as long as you don't rev it up while making the noise it should clear up before running too long.
It kind of throwed me off when you said it started doing it 5 minutes after it was running. Glad it quit. Easy on the ether if you ever have to use it and don`t let no-one make the mistake of filling her up with gasoline!
