Just got word fromt he shop on a vibration in the wheel and feel it in the cab too. They seem to think it is a wheel balance problem but the wheels are powder balanced. Tires are like 8K old. Any ideas if this is possible with powder balance wheels to get out of balance???
What brand tires are they? I had Super Swamper tires that were powder balanced and they still vibrated at highway speeds. If it is a stock tire size try changing it with the spare and see if the vibration is still there. Make sure there are no weights on the rims because they will counter act the powder also.
They are BFG 295/75/16 on stock rims......didn't have the vibration for about the first 7K but started for about the last 1000. Rotated tires....but vibration didn't seem to move. Could it be fine one minute and be bad 7K later???? Tire place said they could remove powder and do tradtional balance for a fee??? Should i try that or is it BS about the vibration being linked to the tires?
My BFGs always balanced well especially with powder. I don't think a tire can just go bad like that, usually if a tire is out round you can't balance them from day one. Or if a belt breaks, but you would see a rather large bulge some where on the tire. If you rotated the tires and still felt the vibration in the same place that would make me think its not the tire. Plus the fact that you didn't have this vibration for the first 7k also makes me think that. I would try putting the spare on see if the vibration is eliminated.
Spare is a diff size tire though......spare is 265/75/16. Replacing with spare won't work then will it??? Any ideas??? I have heard drive shaft balance, carrier bearing, u-joints, any ideas???????
If you put the spare up front you shouldn't have a problem if you don't use 4wd. I won't drive around on it for long time either. If its not your tire it could be numerous things, you really have to iscolate where the vibration is coming from. Does it do it all the time? Can you tell where it is coming from front or rear? All which you mention are possibilities. A mechanic can check for bad u-joints. Usually a bad u-joint is a vibration when accelerating. As for drive shaft and carrier bearings I really don't too much about that.
I would imagine if you can feel it in the seat and wheel, it may be other than tires. Give the drive line a good lookin over. Is the 8k mileage the entire vehicle or just the tires? I know of people who use powder on all their vehicles and are well pleased with the results. Keep us posted.
8k on the tires.....86k on the vehicle......driveline all looks tight according to me and two shops.....no play in anything or excessive wear...no accidents, deer, etc.....just normal driving.....any ideas????
I don't know Jerrod, I can't think of anything else. I did read an article on ford-trucks.com forums. Someone had a vibration between 45-60 mph when on the gas. He replaced two u-joints on the rear driveshaft and no more vibration.
Jarrod, I'm not sure how much this will help but have you looked at your shocks? I just replaced mine with bilstein 5100s after the old ones had 57,000 miles on them. The reason I replaced them was I was getting some vibration in the wheel at roughly the same speeds you described so I took it into Firestone and had them rebalanced and rotated. They did an inspection while it was there and said I had a week shock on the left front sure enough after I replaced the shocks,(by the way I did it myself instead of paying them to do it), the vibration went away. I'm not sure if this is the problem in your case but I would at least give it a look over. Good luck!
