Can somebody tell me how to get rid of this ANNOYING pop-up. It just started a couple of days ago, I get tons of pop-ups from WhenU and Save!
I have a pop-up killer but it is not working against this. I'm going nuts, please help!
I also use Adaware6.0 and update it weekly. Another program you may find interesting and very helpful is SpywareBlaster. It has a companion called SpywareGuard that work in conjunction with each other. The downloads are free but you can offer a small payment to the builder of the programs. The original website is down for upgrades for a couple days, but you can get the latest version of SpywareBlaster at :http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sbdownload.html
This program not only removes spyware but keeps it from downloading. Using Adaware and SpywareBlaster and Spyware Guard I seldom have any issues with pop ups or other nasties being placed into my machine. You still need to check them once in a while for updates, because the idiots that make the spyware know they are being blocked and are constantly developing new codes to bypass the filters.
Good luck.
Another good tool (and the only one I've found that can take care of some "hijack" websites) is Spybot Search and Destroy. A hijack website is one that takes over your browser and forces it's homepage as your own and also forces searches through it's webpages. You can reset your homepage all you want, and you can run adaware and everything, but the next time you reboot the hijacker will reset your browser. Some of these can be particularly nasty, and Spybot is the only one that we have found here at work that can clear up the mess. As Fordlover1951 mentioned, you do need to run the "check for updates to Spybot" function after you install it so you can be sure you have the latest "definition" files for the program. You can find it at http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php. (It is a free program also, but the company does accept donations).
I have a problem with those stupid meesenger services things, the little window that pops up (not your normal pop-up window) but one like the error messages, if I am playing a game, it auto minimizes it and everything....HOW do I stop this crap? it is more annoying than the old pop-ups

This might help out--(I assume you're running a Windows pc). You can do any or all of these steps, but obviously you will have most success with doing all of the steps.
First thing you want to do is make sure you've got all your security updates/patches. The method for updating varies from Windows version to version, so do a search on "windows update" from your "start-- help" buttons. It will tell you how to check and see if there are any Microsoft security patches that you need, and prompt you to automatically download them . For example, on my XP machine I go to the "help" item from the start menu, and there is an item there to "automatically check for windows updates". It may list a whole lot of patches or upgrades, but you only need to be really concerned with "critical patches or upgrades". Be warned, however, it may take a while to download these, especially if you use a dialup connection.
After you have all your updates, run adaware or spybot or any of the other above mentioned spyware/adware busters.
Then! Go to www.grc.com and click on "shields up". From the next page, scroll down to "your three musketeers" and run each of the three small programs (1) unplug'N'pray, (2)DCOMbobulator and (3)shoot the messenger. the last one disables the windows messaging system which is exploited by a lot of hackers to make those messages pop up which look like system messages. I would highly encourage you look around the GRC site-- there is a lot of good info there on computer security. Try their 'shields up' demo and see if your machine is vulnerable to hackers.
Just a few things to try.
thanks for the help, all the windows patches are updated, comp is only 1 week old, it has Adaware, not actualy firewall, I am wondering if a router will alleviate this probllem? reason I ask is because the comps I am normally on are all ehind routers and they never get these pop-up things.
Yea, if you can get behind a router, do it! Your actual machine's IP address will be hidden from the net-- all anyone outside will see is the router. I would still highly recommend the GRC site, though. Also, since it is a new machine you are probably running XP? If so, there is a rudimentary firewall built in! It isn't blackice or zonealarm, but it is def. better than nothing. After connected to the net, go start-control panel-network settings. Right click on the current connection and choose properties. Then go to the far right hand tab (I can't recall exactly what it is called right now, I'm not on my XP box- I think it is called "advanced") and click the checkmark next to "protect my pc while on the net" (or something to that effect)- this turns on the firewall. With the XP firewall running I was able to pass all of the "shields up" probe testing from the GRC site- I failed it without running the firewall, even with all the patches (two ports were still vulnerable to probing). Gotta love Microsoft products!
I downloaded the trial version of SpySweeper. Though I use ZoneAlarm as a firewall and run Spybot and Adaware on a weekly basis, SpySweeper caught a ton of crap in my registry, in particular WinWhatWhere. One thing I noticed with SpySweeper is that it's a resource hog, it makes my athlon 1200 stutter at times when it's running.
