It sounds like you've been had. I did mine in about fifteen minutes. Did they quote a price before they did the work?
You might also check to see if your switch was covered under a recall. Several Ford vehicles from the early 90's were covered. You don't say what year yours is, but you can check here: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/pr...callsearch.cfm
The diagnostic fee should be there....and I'm guessing that the most of the rest of the charge is to key the new switch to your old key. You do not need the old key it works nothing else. Just get a new switch and use the key that comes with it.
I had my ignition switch off last fall on my '93...takes about 5-10 minutes to actually remove and replace, and I'd never done one before. They probably charged you for a bunch of diagnostic BS to prove the switch was bad. But $270? That seems like 3-4 hours of labor.
Just did mine today. Took me one hour and I had no idea what the heck I was doing. Had to do it twice since I didn't realize that there was actually a rod that connected to it, oops. And I pulled the pin that holds it in place until you actually get things connected correctly, so I had to play around with it a bit. So my guess is either they charge more than a lawyer per hour or they had somebody doing the work that knew less than me, and that's a scary thought!
i replaced my key switch in my 87' 6 wks ago in the parking lot of the parts store, it actually took me longer to go in and get and pay for it than it did to swap'em out. DW
Given I told them what I wanted done (I knew exactly what was wrong)
they can still charge me diagnostic?
As it turns out, turning the key did nothing to either turn the truck on or off...
so they installed abrand new switch with with its matching key.
Cost of part was $17 (which I never mind paying for good FOMOCO parts)
I just question the diagnostic fee.....charging me for somethng I already know....sheesh.
Perhaps I shouldn't be such a wiseguy eh DW?
They service writer quoted me $245 because he thought it was the swivel elbow for the tilt steering.... thinking the tech was going to have to dig way down into the column....as it turns out it was exactly what I told him it was....Duh!! The switch loop at the rear broke off....and swith needed R and R.
Their customer service kept on calling to see if I was happy....Of course I told them that I would no longer take my vehicle(s) in for service with them.
I say vehicles because the family owns many Fords.
Ouch Capone. My 89 was under factory recall and your 88 may be as well. I also had mine replaced a couple years ago and only cost me $30. but I bouth the part and had a locksmith do it for me.
Called Ford corporate...nope...no recall for ign switches.....I guess it is an expensive lessens learned. I should have asked here....what a dumb@ss I am.
A full load of classes including Calc and Physics will do that to ya...
I just replaced the lock Cyl and key on my 94. The key set which includes 2 new keys, an ignition and 2 door lock cyl. cost me $82 from ford. I was afraid to do the ignition cyl because I thought I'd have to remove the steering wheel. But I didn't and it took about 30 sec to change. It's almost scary how easy it was. No wonder car thieves can steal cars so easily
