This is my first time posting. I have a 1978 F-100 stepside, 300 inline 6 automatic, good shape I bought it new. I have been having trouble keeping it running, but not all the time, It will run for about ten minutes then it will start running rough wanting to stall I have to put it in neutral and feather it and get it to a safe place in a hurry before it dies. When it dies I can hardly get it started sometimes I have to keep the gas pedel to the floor to start, I have to wait about ten minutes, and feather the gas to start. Most of the time its better but not all the time. Put a new stock sngl barrel carb. on last year, plugs, wires, fuel filter, dis. cap an tune -up. I also put a new gas tank on this year, replaced vacuume lines under the hood. Also this year I replaced the ignition module. If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be great. Is there any advantage to putting on a electric fuel pump? Whew .Thanks

Did it quit like this before you replaced these things?
Have you replaced the ignition coil lately? What about the ignition module?
They might be good when cold but then starts acting up when warm. Letting the engine cool down probably gives time to cool down the ignition coil and ignition module components and let it work.

No this is something new!
Slade901:
I replaced the coil about 3 years ago. I just replased the Ignition Module 2 days ago,and it still did it.
EDIT:
Here's a thought, would a muffler be bad on the inside but look good on the outside? and how could I tell if it was bad on the inside? Blockedge? But why only once in a while? Do's this sound dumb?
EDIT:

After it stalls, open the air cleaner lid and look at the choke plate. If it is covering the primary bores then it's still closed. As the engine heats up it should open. If not then either the choke mechanism needs adjusting (turn a round black housing on the passenger side of the carb) or has failed.
Sorry I haven't posted. Life. I checked out the choke it looked like it was working fine. Thanks. I took my truck out for a ride and I got stuck, had to wait for about 10 or 15 min. till it warmed up some more. While I was waiting I happened to grab hold of the EGR valve and when I did it was loose ( the front part ) I could wiggle it and when I did the idle just got worse and almost died, pulled it off and the shaft looked bent. I had cleaned it last year, it thought it looked fine, but. Thinking of replaceing it ( EGR ). Any thoughts?
This has been a slow coming problem over the last year. It has got to the point where I can't get it idle smooth, even if I let it warm up long enough. Does this make sence? Thanks.
I would look at the fuel pump/pressure. Weak pump or a clogged line could do it.
Have you done this?
Also, I would install a see-thru fuel filter in-line and see what the fuel is doing. Install downstream, between the pump and the carb. The fuel pump could be bad.
As far as an electric fuel pump - they have their advantages, but the stock pump should be fine with your stock setup.
Additionally, the carburetor could be bad, even though it's new, since you have to hold it to the floor to get it started. With that in mind: Does it sound flooded when you crank it over? Does black smoke roll from the exhaust pipe(s)?
