Which Axle Do I have?
I have 1980 F250 4x4, It is 8 lug. Its the heavy 3/4 ton. I look around and i see parts for the Dana 44, The Dana 44HD, and the Dana 50. I have no idea how to tell the difference. The axle code on my door jam is C7. I got a drivers side axle shaft off of ebay and the guy said it was for a 1980 F250 with the Dana 44. So i called ford to ask if the axle shaft was the same for all three axles, the guy said yes. So i bought the axle and come to find out it was too short! Please Help!! Warren

Which axle are you talking about? Front or back, you did not specify. All of the axles you listed were mainly used as front axles on the F-250. The rear for that year should be a Dana 60.

I'm assuming that you are talking about the front axle. If so, it is a Dana 44HD. High pinion I believe. It was later on that Ford started using the Dana 50 as a front axle. Your rear is a Dana 60.

if you are talking about the front axle, you could have a dana 50 ifs reverse . the easiet way is to look at the hubs and knuckle u-joints. the hub is close to @ 4" in dia the knuckle will also be larger. i have also experanced that they are not always the same length shafts. i had a reg dana 44 ifs for a bronco. when a buddy broke a shaft we used one of mine and it was too long we had to swap the 3rd member and axle tube to get it right. as for the rear you might have a sterling 10.25" i've got a '81 f-250 hd w/a sterling. the dana has more webbing on the center chunk.
