I got permission from the little lady to trade in the Tacoma for a real truck. I need power to tow my Jeep and hopefully a boat in the next couple years, and I need daily driver dependability.
I love the look and feel of an F250, and would buy a Powerstroke straight away, but I am convinced that the Cummins is a better motor in terms of power capability (bombing), longetivity, and economy.
I would hate to have to buy a Dodge cause it has a Cummins...

Can you guys convince me to buy a Powerstroke???
You have already said "I am convinced that the Cummins is a better motor in terms of power capability (bombing), longetivity, and economy"
I've seen PSD's with close to 500,000 miles and still running like new. I have nothing against the Cummins other than the fact that it is in a Dodge. The PSD will make just as much power, if not more than a Cummins and last every bit as long, or longer,WITH PROPER MAINTENANCE!!! The Super Duty is a better looking truck in my opinion and a better built truck as well.
Disclaimer: I really don't know much of anything about trucks, and I just bought my first one about a week ago.
That said, I KNOW a lot of people with trucks, because I have horses.
WITHOUT fail, everyone I know who has a Dodge and tows a load with it has it in the shop all the time. The people I know who don't haul stuff don't really have problems.
Since you're looking for a truck to haul your jeep and boat, you might want to consider something other than Dodge.
Cummins may be a very good engine, but you got to consider the packaging here. Not considering engine, the Ford truck is better than the Dodge IMO. Better enough to tip the scale back past whatever advantage you think the Cummins has over the PSD.........
The power difference between the Cummins and the Powerstroke is obsolete anymore. They are both great motors that will give you all the power you need. And if they don't have enough power for you, there are so many modifications you can do to the motor to improve the performance. The Powerstroke will last as long if not longer as anything out there if you maintain it correctly. I agree that the Ford is an overall better truck than the Dodge and would highly recommend it.
How new of truck are you looking at?
The cummins is a good motor - no question IMO - but the packaging (Dodge truck) isn't up to it. I have a buddy running 400+ hp in his Dodge diesel and he has 138,000 miles on his truck with no problems. But he has never towed anything - he just runs it to work and back. Start using a Dodge as a TRUCK and you'll be spending money! The trucks just aren't built sturdy enough IMO. I love the sound of a cummins and the power (modded - not stock) but I just wouldn't own one myself.
The Cummins is a great engine. If you find one with a manual trans I wouldnt hesitate to buy one but by all means STAY AWAY from any cummins powered Dodge with an auto trans!!!!! My poor old grey haired mother just paid $2700 to get the tranny in her Dodge rebuilt with only 50,000 miles on it.
I agree with everyone above. Cummins is a great motor, its all I will have in my big rigs. I've owned a Dodge and after 80,000 of HARD work it just fell apart around the motor. Now I've got a F550 pushing 250k with nothing major happening other than injectors around 180k, and I work it 3x harder than I ever worked the Dodge. Just look around on the highway. Companies buy PSD for work trucks 5x more than Dodge and Chevy combined. Must mean something.
Thanks guys. Thats kinda what I figured. I just wanted to hear that the PSD was still good competetion for the 6BT.
From what I've seen in the classifieds, a Cummins (engine, not rest of truck) is good for >300kmi, but I wasnt sure of PSD.
BTW:
I was looking at used rigs. Probably a '97ish 12v Cummins vs a '99 or '00 (pre-powdered rods) PSD.

I have to strongly agree with that toturdriver said. Here in my part of Texas/town, I see way more company trucks with the Powerstroke below the hood. I hardly see any companies that use the chevy truck with either the 8.1 V8 or the duramax. I rarely ever see whatever company using a cummins for a work truck. If I did, I'd go buy a lottery ticket becuase this is something you see once in a blue moon. With that much said, I think the 'stroker as well as the truck that surrounds it will last you a long time. Just look at it this way, if you love it and give it the small amount of maintenance it needs, it will love you back and give you years and miles of faithful service.
