I got rid of my 99 250 PSD CC for an 01 Dodge 2500 with what else yes a Cummins. It has an auto and is fantastic. I can run circles around powerstrokes all day now it is unbelievable. Then, I have straightpiped it so no kitty and not muffy so it sounds like a Eightteen wheeler. Of couse wow does it rumble. And now I am sorry I will not be getting back into a powerstroke for a while. Don't get me wrong I love them, great mileage, crew cab plentiful, but I just like the Dodge so much better for me. I have truly fell in love.

i own a 95 cummins and love it,but i will agree with those guys the engine is great but the dodge does have some problems.what ever truck you buy make sure its a stick. auto are fine stock (dodge torque converter sucks not the tranny),but if you plan on bombing one plan on spending at least 3000 for tranny upgrades dodge or ford.buy a 12v if you go dodge upgrades r alot cheaper. the psd is a nice engine too. ford is built better than dodge., but the psd dont compare to the cummins in power, mpg and longevity.the cummins is a medium duty diesel (boats and generators, same engine) psd is a light duty engine.

I'll have to argue that PSD are light duty engines. They are turned way down when in a pickup truck, but are capable of 400+ Hp. The same engine is in big International straight trucks. And maybe I'm wrong, maybe those are deemed light duty engines even in straight trucks. If I'm not mistaken, the Cummins is a 5.9L, which when compared to the PSD(7.3L) in displacement per cylinder, are very close. If you're claiming the PSD is light duty, I reckon you'll have to make the same claim for your Cummins. Just my opinion.

The PSD, both 7.3 and 6.0, do not make over 400HP in any configuration from the factory. The International versions, the VT365 and the T444E, do not make more HP than the PSD mainly because they are governed at lower RPM. None of these engines are used in big rigs. While the PSD and Cummins are both great engines, they each have their ups and downs. The PSD is better suited for use in light duty trucks and in my opinion is a better choice than a Cummins 5.9. I've driven Dodge pickups with the Cummins and have not been overly impressed. While it makes tons of low end torque the torque curve is not as broad as the PSD. The Cummins is better suited for medium duty use where it can be matched with a transmission with more than 6 gears to take advantage of the torque curve.
Dont know where you get your info but PSD's are rated as medium duty diesels same as cummins. The 7.3 is an International t444e motor. Not sure what model the 6.0 crosses to. The difference in horsepower, torque and fuel mileage are due to cummins doing things right; like a 4" exhaust, larger turbo. The cummins is also an inline 6 vs the PSD which is a V8. The PSD is easily capable of producing more hp and torque than a cummins but due to FoMoCo's computer programming it is severly cut back. As I've said before in this thread, the Cummins motor is a great power plant and it compares very favorably with a PSD, BUT, when all is said and done its whats put around the power plant that matters in this case. The SuperDuty will just flat out last longer. Thats my .02.
The cummins engine rocks....not much argument there. But like the others have said...you need to look at the overall package. My 99 has nearly 90k miles on it. I stopped by the dealership yesterday to pick up a fuel filter and my truck was mistaken for a brand new model by customers wandering the lot. My point is that these trucks run and look good for a long long time after the "new car smell" has long gone. I don't think the same can be said for the Dodge, they look pretty beat up and worn out after they are used hard a few times. I don't baby my truck either.....it gets plenty of hard work. I think if you go with the PSD, you'll have yourself a fine truck that likes to work hard.
My uncle and cousins have been running Cummins since about '95. Another uncle and my brother have run ford diesels since '83. We all farm for a living. Both are good trucks but let's be honest, when is the last time you saw someone wear out a diesel? The tranny goes, the brakes fail, and the doors fall off, but the diesel runs and runs. (shoot- my old F150 351 has 153,000 and runs good w/o using oil) If we put away longevity, concentrate on the rest of the truck. I like the Dodge but the Ford is clearly a nicer truck. The engine is quieter, smoother, and quicker. The auto tranny is better. The Crewcabs are bigger. the list goes on.
Also, drive through an RV park and you'll see four Fords for every Dodge or Chebby. And when is the last time you saw a Dodge or Chevy diesel ambulance. How about Shuttle Buses, Fords.
I'm sure whatever you buy, it will serve you well, but my first choice is Ford.
