I just took apart a regular DC - AC convertor and put the switch on top and added an LCD to see when it was on then cut a hole for the plug. I could have added another plug in the back but did not need one there. I use it to power my laptop when running my GPS.
Sweet...I took the easy way out and got a DC PS...plugs into the ciggi lighter.
It is much safer to use a DC to DC power supply that plugs into an auxilary DC source, than to use a DC to AC convertor (for a laptop). The DC to DC power supplies are a lot more efficient also.
I did that first but my rechargable light and cell phone are all wired into that and this would overload the fuse and then I lose everything. So I ran a dedicated line from the bat for this.
Now you can have the best of both worlds. I have one but have not installed in the truck yet. It is the 1000 watt inverter and I can run my drill motor or small grinder on it.
Not heat problem, as you can see from the pic it is in the open, but you can not see it from the side, the fan still works and there is plenty air. I never used the front part of the console for suqat so I figured why not?
Bob I also use it to run the kids DVD player when on the road but going DC/AC is not a problem, in fact in order to isolate our computers from sometimes bad rig power we go AD-DC-AC because it conditions the power. Also by going to the bat direct I don't get as much draw down when starting although I always try to turn off the converter and let the laptop run on it's batteries while filling with gas or whatever then when I restart I trun it back on.

nice idea for the converter, but you could have just used the dedicated 12v to power your computer.
